Hello, per the quick read course when registering, I am introducing myself. I have a 1969 Land cruiser. I've been reading MUD since I got the 40 about a year ago. I have gotten a ton of info and enjoyed many stories on the forum. I am not a mechanic, I'm an engineer. I listen to car talk and I figured if those bone heads can figure it out, then I can too. I've been doing OK I suppose. My 40 is atypical to say the least. A PO had some modifications, a lot of which appear to be done with shortcuts. So I'm fixing the shortcuts, trying to restore, and make safe (new brakes and such). I call my 40 Frankenstein. It has an Isuzu diesel. I'm still trying to figure out more about what it came out of. My friend and I changed the clutch. Right now I'm wrapping up that project and hopefully I'll soon be converting to front disc brakes. The fill plug on the transfer case is stuck so I think next step is either impact wrench or heat it with a blow torch. Some pictures of Frankenstein are attached.

Greetings, My name is also Frank and I have a 1969 FJ40. What is your Frame number ? Where are you located ?

Welcome to MUD!! I've found a cheap Harbor Freight 12VDC impact gun works really well for breaking loose bolts, etc. without breaking them.

When you squeeze the trigger, it winds up and 'slams' the bolt or (in your case) plug. But, doesn't deliver enough torque to actually snap the bolt.

I just let it wind up and slam multiple times with shots of penetrating oil now and then.

Welcome. Just finished my 69. The diesel sounds interesting so keep us posted on your research.

If you still have the stock aluminium transfer case I would not apply heat. I have used a vise grip on the plug with a floor jack on the end. I have yet to have one not come loose. Hardest has always been my FJ62 with the shollow head. With a deeper head I've used a socket with 24" breaker bar. With a floor jack you can apply more pressure than a impact gun.

fhawk5 I'm in Charleston, SC. Where do I look for the frame number? I tried a breaker bar with a good bit of leverage. I didn't want to go to far because I could tell the plug was getting rounded. I guess I'll try something with a tighter grip and a floor jack, then the HF impact wrench. The transmission plug was stuck but came off with just a little elbow grease. I'm pretty sure it's stock transfer and transmission. It's a three speed with the shifter coming off the top of the transmission (I've heard most are on the steering column). Also, the 4wd seems to be stuck, and let me know if this sounds strange, but it's not vacuum actuated. I've checked and checked and it's just the lever coming of the side/top of transfer. I don't know if that's rare or common.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. Frankenstein also came with a ton of spare parts. I'm not sure what they are from. I still need to sort and organize. I started looking through and looks like a PO was planning on an axle swap. Lots of brake stuff, a birf joint, some bushings, etc. I'll post pictures of those when I get that organized.

Hi Frank. I am also I'm Charleston, SC. Also interested in your progress. I have a 76 FJ40. I am still trying to find the time to do a good inspection. Getting ready to cut out and replace the driver's side floor pan, replace the had tank and get her back on the road.

Try a six sided socket , but first grind the face down to remove the taper at the end so it seats tightly . Use a long breaker bar , never a ratchet and use a large rubber mallet to shock it loose - works every time .
You can replace those with later style plugs as far as I know - they are female hex inside and smooth on the outside and use the sealing washer found on later vehicles like my Taco ...

Frame number is on passenger side . Take a look.

FJ4068944 is the frame number. What is the frame number for? I got the fill plug out! I soaked it in PB Blaster then waited a week bc I got distracted with yard work. I sprayed it again about 30 minutes before I started working on it. I used a six point socket with 12" breaker bar. While putting a lot of torque on it I hit it with a rubber mallet and then with a hammer. I wasn't hitting it when it came loose. I'm not sure if the PB Blaster was necessary because there was no rust on the threads or any where around it. I didn't expect any really with all the oil it is usually soaking in. But any way, got it out. I filled up with new gear oil and reused the plug since it looked good. I also installed these new hood latches since the old ones were non-existent.
