this is the situation.........1974 fj55 1 1/2 F
last couple of days the clutch sticks.......with engine running:confused:
examples;
:wrench: come to red traffic light.... go to neutral, stop....green light; clutch does not engage till I cut off engine place it in 2nd and hit starter holding the brake and then it engages
this morning when started her up to go to work.....found clutch stuck.....had to hit starter motor with it in 2nd and it broke loose:confused:.......did well the rest of the day, <140 miles>till again got to a stop sign.....same crap again.........:bang:
bled slave yesterday........completely new ATE Blue fluid.........no evidence of fluid leakage at master or slave..........am thinking that it is a mechanical pressure plate problem BUT like to be prepared for other options; TIA

Howdy! Sounds more like hydraulic problem to me. Never heard of ATE Blue, is it the same as DOT 3 Brake Fluid? Sounds like the master cylinder got cleaned out too good, and it is passing fluid, part time. I take it that when you push the pedal, the clutch does not disengage. Have you tried rapidly pumping the pedal? Good luck on this one. John

John; when I pump the pedal it is as if nothing at stop sign with motor running............cannot get it into gear, then I cut off the motor put it in 2nd, hit the starter and with a thump hear the "clutch" release and can get it to go into gear with foot on clutch ! :hhmm:originally my thoughts were that it was a hydraulic problem but now......not too sure:confused:............don't want to tear into things w/o an idea of what do look for....................ATE Blue brake fluid is a premium brake fluid and is what some German manufacturers recommend; it is a DOT 3/4 brake fluid and have been using it now for a long time.....the Mercedes plant is close by in Vance and have been able to pick up a few pointers from some of their engineers ;) TIA

I would say the fingers on the pressure plate are worn or grooved, catching the throwout bearing.

Howdy! Well, I'm pretty lost on this one. I've had clutch slaves and/or masters leak internally, and externally, on both stock drivelines and my Chevota setups. I have had the push rod bend, and the slave bracket bend, but none of these is quite what you have. Any chance the clutch fork is moving on and off of the pivot ball, so that it doesn't always engage the throwout bearing properly? Can you pull out the weather boot and inspect it? Maybe have someone else pedal it while you are under the rig? John

none leaking but sticking clutch

:wrench:John; am in :confused: also......no signs of leaks inside the
boot/bellows.....heck the fluid was changed completely; not because it was low but just to make sure there was no debris or bubbles......good pedal feel just that:bang: intermitant sticking when the truck is stopped.....cannot get it into gear from neutral till it is shutdown.....shifted into a gear..I use 2nd..... hit with the starter and it thumps <clutch> and away I go again till the next stop when I have to repeat the process all over...........am thinking it is a mechanical issue <pressure plate?> more than Hydraulics ........will have to wait till this weekend and have my 12 year old hit the clutch pedal while I watch the fork....this is a new one on me:confused: I like to make a diagnosis and a repair plan before I start tearing into things...... TIA
