How much short is the inside of a LX to a 100? It's not unusual for me to sleep in my 80 on fishing or hunting trips. I'm 5'10, can I make it happen in a 120 without removing the second row?

I'm sure you meant GX, as the LX470 is the same as a 100 series. The GX is the same platform as a 4th gen 4Runner, if that helps you at all. I can tell you the rear cargo area is a lot narrower than my 80 was, I'm sure they are comparable as far as length for sleeping though. I'm not able to provide any actual measurements right now.

Thanks, Ian you are correct I said LX and was thinking GX. Interesting comment on the width I would have thought is was withing an inch or two.

I'll try and remember to measure it for you and post back. If you were to build a sleeping platform, it does widen above the wheel wells, and there is lots of ceiling height in the GX470/Prado 120 body style, much more than a 4th Gen 4Runner or LC80, so that could be the solution. I can tell you at floor height, it's 5-6" narrower than my wife's '05 Acura MDX, which makes a huge difference when packing the truck for a trip somewhere, or putting dog kennels in, etc.

Red line (from 2nd row seat in the up position straight back to the cargo door closed) is approximately 60"
Green line (from corner to 2nd row seat in the up position) is approximately 72"
Blue line (from wheel well to wheel well) is approximately 44"

I'm 5' 7" and have to sleep at a bit of an angle to make it comfortable, you might want the second row right out for sleeping.

Thanks, good to know. Is the second row pretty easy to remove? Fromn RCsGX pic it looks like it might be similar to a 80 and pretty easy.

What you really need is a sleeping platform that goes on top of the folded 2nd row. Then you'll have lots of storage room underneath in the cargo area.

Something on top of the folded 2nd row seats that folded over on itself when the seats are up would be perfect, you'd almost need wings to go full width on the forwardmost section. It would get you up past much or all of the wheelwells, and take advantage of the tall roofline. And lots of built in storage!

I used to sleep at an angle inside the 100 and I'm only 5'6. Even though I technically had enough space, I'd end up bumping into the corners and would have a difficult time getting a good nights rest. Recently, I started leaving the drivers side 3rd row seat in and laying a sheet of 1/2" ply and eggcrate foam over the folded 2nd & 3rd row seats. It's level and much more comfortable.

I'm now on the hunt for a GX 470 and plan to take a similar approach except swapping the 3rd row seat with a purpose built storage box. Even with a trailer and RTT at my disposal, it's nice to be fully self contained on solo trips.

A storage box in the back built to the same level as the second row folded down would make an ideal sleeping arrangement for a full size inflatable mattress.

I did that on my 80. Although I never ended up sleeping in it, I built the cargo drawers for that purpose and tested (3rd row removed). It worked out pretty well. The added bonus is that the folded seat height is actually a bit higher than the rear wheel wells. So the top of the cargo drawers made for a totally flat space in the rear cargo area. Much easier to load not working around the wheel wells.

My GX is a different story. I told myself I was going to keep the 3rd row in on the GX. However, after having been spoiled with cargo drawers, I realize I need additional storage. I plan to keep the 3rd row in, but folded. I am building a cargo box that will fill the area behind the 3rd row and will be the same height as the folded third row. Won't have near as much storage as my 80's drawers, but will provide a place for tools, recovery gear, etc. and leave a nice flat surface to load above the third (with the rubber cargo protector on top of the folded seats). I think it would also work for sleeping in a pinch, but would want a decent size air mattress to cover the gaps between the second and third rows.

I'm probably not explaining it well, but I'll post pics when I finish the project in a few weeks (or months or years).

I am still waffling on selling my 80, I haven't found the boat I want so nothing needed this boating season. I did look at a nice 100 (07) w/170K for $<20K which seamed like a good deal. Then a nice KDSS GX for $15K with 105k miles, I scheduled the PPI but backed away as even though is was never registered as an NE truck it had significant surface rust on the suspension, exhaust etc.

Whatever I get is getting a drawer system with sleeping plaform. but I am also going to look to build a westfalia type top that would just rock!
