My carpet is shot in my 62 and I am thinking about replacing it with a "carpet alternative". I dont want to have to worry about cleaning up carpet as my vehicle transitions from DD to trail/weekend excursioner. The Durabak (truck bed liner) that JP used for the exterior of his 40 when it was blue came to mind. My questions are

1. Are there any negative "side effects" of using it for this application?

2. Does anyone in the club have any experience/advice about doing this?

3. Are there any other alternatives i should consider?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

the only down side to removing the carpet is you are going to loose the noise some of the noise damping effect of the carpet and the insulation underneath it. I don't think I would personally durabak the inside on your 62 mainly for aesthetic quality........ lining the floors of a 40 looks good and is functional because it is such a clean spartan interior to start with, or atleast that is my opinion.

You could look into molded PVC mats to place over the carpet that way you keep the carpet for insulation and noise damping and you can easily remove the mats for easy clean up....

don't know if that helps or made any sense but I tried :grinpimp:

I agree with the loss of sound deadening. If you are wanting to use it more for some wheeling purposes it will definitely be cleaner though. I think Alan has a cruiser or two with a similar floor coating.

I used Dynamat to replace Toyota's original sound dampening effect in a FJ40 restoration. Also extensively underneath the tub in conjunction with Eastwoods seam sealer and trunk paint. Alex and I applied Rustoleum's bed liner to the interior floor of his 40. All these things work and look good and help with noise deadening. Good Luck. The rustoleum kit is about 75.00 at Lowes Stores.

I vote for lining it, dynamatting it, then adding good vinyl sheets that form.

No worries if crud gets under...the liner will protect you.

Along those same lines, I have seen a 62 that had the carpet replaced with what looked like sheets of Husky Liner. The liner had a finished look in that it was tailored to fit where the carpet had been, including the backs of the 2nd row seats. (The mat was fitted into the moldings) The "diamond plate" look in the black mat is nice!

thanks for the responces guys.
the noise dampening is an area i did not think about. also, for me cost is going to be a big factor. i like the stuff you showed me jp but i dont think i can justify spending $500 on that right now. im on a tight car budget, especially until we sell my blazer.
