I dont know if ill get much response here but since my rig could potentially be used for a number of functions offroad, I figured I would give this area a shot.

Here's my rig -

I got a cancellation notice from Pemco the other day stating that they do not insure vehicles used offroad. I havent had it offroad in over two years unfortunately because life has just got in the way. We drive it on the street once in a while but for the most part its a garage queen.

The last time we had it out was just on forest service roads, with a discovery pass and state parks pass. There were subaru's, pickups etc...on long gravel roads.

I would like to go out wheeling again at some point. Who do you guys use to insure your 4x4's that are still street legal ?

I just got a quote today from State Farm, which was a bit higher than others like Progressive. They had no problem insuring my modified FJ60. My policy offers "Actual Cash Value" for a total loss but naturally you have to prove with documentation that it's worth more than KBB if that arose.

One thing to confirm is for your policy to always pay ACV and not simply Stated Value, which could be less. Some policies have a note that they can pay stated value if it's less than ACV for a total loss.

I use State Farm for both of my vehicles, there is no provision I am aware of the precludes coverage if off road. Although if I were to seriously offroad I would probably let them know so they could charge me the correct premium (if its not already included). I pay around $950/year for the LX with $250/$500 deductible with towing and rental, and decent limits on coverage. State Farm is expensive in some respects, but I've never had a big issue with them when I comes to claims.

Another ++ for State Farm... Never an issue with mine and they even agreed to insure a 2011 JK with LS3 and a boat load of mods.

Agent wanted to make sure I had all receipts for ACV as the $35K Rubicon now topped the scales at $70K

I'll pay more to know I'm covered when something happens.

Best of luck -

J

I have had Progressive for years and they have "addition accessory" coverage. It is basically just a dollar amount that you specify for additional coverage. Years ago I rolled my Jeep (wheel fell off on road) and they gave me 50% on all the aftermarket stuff I had. I did have to show receipts.

I sell insurance for a living and each company had their own rules. I believe an Independant agent is a better bet because they shop your policy for you. Some companies will exclude off road use. Best bet is to call and Talk bluntly about how you will use it. They can help. I insure a couple vendors on here and they are all covered for much less than you would expect. Even some jdm import stuff.
If you are in Utah Arizona or Idaho I can help you. 8018245099. Just make sure it's right before you go off road.

I have used State Farm since I started driving in the 70s. I have asked several times about offroad coverage for my truck and they have always assured me that it is fully covered as long as it's not a competition event.

I don't understand....if you flip your rig offroad aren't you SOL? I go to offroad parks often and when people total their rigs out on trails the insurance company is not on their list of people to call.

same principal for when you take your street car to the drag strip and hit the wall right?

unless im missing something???

You are missing something each company looks at these things differently.
Off Road parks can be considered racing events that are excluded on most policies. Recreating on public land or places like moab are different.

But as stated each company is different.

I don't understand how the insurance company knows where you do or don't drive your car.

In some cases it would be if you had a claim, where did it occur.

And of course, Social media and forums. ie:did someone post a photo of their rig doing something the insurance company feels would put them at risk for paying a claim.

And if you have one of the "Data Loggers" to get a discount like Progressive and State Farm offer. These track all sorts of things, speed, acceleration, lateral loads, braking, etc!

In addition, things like "On Star", track the vehicle at all times and record the data. The data is available to insurance companies.

Keep in mind, most smart phones also track and record your location and that information can be obtained by insurance companies also.

Find out what coverage you have and if it fits what you do with the vehicle.

I use Geico & no problems.

Plus is you can insure for appraised value @ a higher premium.
