I've read threads for hours trying to determine the details around installing a H55F in my '89 FJ62/3FE/A440A/HF2A cruiser.

My current question is if the HF2A t-case will bolt up to the H55F. There have been many good threads on this but still not the detail around my specific make/model/year vehicle.

I've read that if you have a split t-case that it will bolt to the H55F. I understood the few mods being suggested to make this work, but I still have someone at CruiserOutfitters that saying that since I have the Split T-case that connected to an Auto (A440F) versus a H42 it won't work. He was suggesting that I look for another t-case off a standard FJ60.

Not sure who to believe.

Any help??

Thanks but I've already been through that tread and there's not enough detail regarding exactly which transfer case Dunbar used. I have contacted Dunbar, but have not yet had good conversatoin with him yet. That is definatly in my plan if he's still willing.

Everything I've read tells me I have a part-time HF2A split t-case. Will this match up to the H55F?

Yes, that is what he used. There is only one t-case for the US FJ-62. You need a 3F bellhousing, flywheel, clutch, the clutch M/C, pedal, linkages, some longer bolts to mate the t-case to the H55, a modified rear crossmember, late FJ-60 drive shafts or modified FJ-62 shafts, provision for the neutral start switch, reverse light switch. Not sure if I am remembering everything.

Thanks for confirming that. I was ordering parts for the T-case rebuild when the person told me it wouldn't work.

Now I just need to find the 3F bell housing and determine which way to go with the drive shafts.

Any idea if the '87 FJ60 drive shafts worked with no mods to length? If I have to modify them, I'll just modify the length on my originals and just stick with them.

Thanks again Andrew!

I thought your best bet are modifiying your currect driveshaft ..

So I also thought the 87 FJ60 driveshaft maybe function .. but Toyota have a lots of diferent configurations .. so I'm not sure.

Parts

I looked into this about three months ago. Hit up the guys at cruiserpart.net and they'll sell you all the bits and pieces you'll need for $750-800? including modded drive shafts.

I believe the drive shafts from a 60 series with the 3F bellhousing will work since the tranny and t-case will be in the same location as a FJ-60. Cruisreparts.net is a good source for all the parts you need for the conversion. They are a cruiser junk yard.

Thanks to all for the feedback. I've got about all the parts ordered. At least enough to where I need to stop wait for arrivals and piece everything together, even if it's only laying all the parts out so I can see what still may be missing.

I need to find this oil cup/funnel that Dunbar and others mentioned. I'll keep you all posted as the progress and pictures are available.

The truck is still on the road, so today I'm heading to the Tonto National Forest north of Globe, AZ.

Have a great weekend!!

Oiller cup can be found at your local Toyota dealer. And for sure talk to Dunbar. He has done exactly what you want to do. I will be dropping my 3FE in my FJ-60 with the H55 so it is much easier for me. I have only researched what you want to do and I found that Dunbar was the man.

Alright! Go for it!

I will send you the pics I have, and the writeup that is mostly in the post you have seen. Remember that my truck was absolutely US Stock configuration.

The 86-87 drive shafts will work with no problem. The little oil cup thing is essensial. Look at CCOT web site for a picture of it and where it goes.

You can also call me or email direct for more info. My work email is David.Dunbar "at" Total "dot" com that is for work and I will be there through the end of March. You can also hit me at my yahoo email address from the 3FE list. My cell phone is five one two six nine nine eight four zero two.

Dunbar

im looking in to this once the tranny in my 62 dies, you will have to take pics and note,

Thanks for the offer Dunbar, I'll be certain to take you up on it!

I just got the 3F bell housing ordered from Cruiserparts.com, so most of what I need is on it's way to the house.

I be sure too add pics and notes to this thread as I go along. I won't get started until the weekend of March 11th.

Dude how much was the 3f BH? I need to pick one up.

I have FJ62 with carb. 3F with H55F.
I checked toyota catalog and found 3F bellhousing is same with 2F's.

Any parts from a may '85 and newer FJ-60 will work. drive shafts etc.
Don't forget the oiling cup. and there is one bolt hole on the front half of the T/C that will need to be plugged. I installed a H55F on my 5/85 FJ-60. I had the hole tapped and a pipe plug loctited in. 4-speed uses 5 bolts and H55F uses 4 bolts. Yours maybe different since it was mated to an auto trans.
Get a rebuild kit for the x-fer since you will have it apart anyway. HTHs

The 3F housing was $40 plus shipping on 38 pounds. It's not due to arrive until 3/6. Send me an email, mjhamlin@cox.net, and I'll forward you the email they sent with ordering info.

I had heard that 3F or 2F would work. Take a picture from under your truck showing the cross member and post it. I would be interested to see it. They didn't make your version truck in the US, so I wonder what the diffs are? Dunbar says the stock FJ62 crossbar will not work and he had to make mods.

Darryl:
I believe I read your threads on the FJ60 H55F conversion. So, I think I'm on top of the items you pointed out. Thanks again!! I still need the oil cup and I should be ordering the t-case rebuild kit and tranny gasket in the next few days.

I ordered my H55F from CoolCruisers.com and they provide the tap and plug for the job you mentioned. Dunbar shows a picture in his thread.

For those that have bolted the 3F bellhousing to their 3FE, what was the torque spec for those bolts? And the torque spec for the Flywheel bolts? I only have a 62 FSM so far, and it covers the H55 and clutch, but not the belhousing. Thanks.

I researched and found my Non-USA FJ62's crossmember is same with 8504-8708 US FJ60 (P/N : 51202-60072 or 51202-60073).
But ATM uses different crossmember.
So you can adopt crossmember directly from post 8504 US FJ60.

Schaats,
Thanks for looking at the cross member. I'll see what I can find.

The 3F bellhousing came today from Cruiser Outfitters, but I still need to find a flywheel cover. So, I'm back to the web.
