Guys, not sure where to post this.. so I'll put it here. I ran into this post while over on ClubB5, which is essentially ih8mud for Passat owners. The similarities are quite amusing: over here we all get CDL switches, over there it's the Euroswitch. Here it's how big of tires will fit, there it's how low can I go, yet both are into swapping suspensions and the ongoing discussion of synthetic oil. Ok, maybe I should have posted this in chat after all...

Anyway here's the company, http://www.mikadotech.com/index.html they make these in-dash garage door openers, that work with just about every home garage door system. So instead of the big thing on the visor, you've got this OEM looking button on the dash.. if you've got "rolling codes" then you buy this converter to mount to your garage wall for another $20. The coolest part is that being a ClubB5 member, you get 20% off. I asked them if they'd like me to extend that offer to some Land Cruiser enthusiast friends of mine, and of course they said yes, so in essence thanks to me ih8mudders now get 20% off too!

The remotes are $59, with the converter they're $75. I just called to place my order, the rolling code converter, in dash switch for the 80 and in dash switch for the Passat came out to $108, plus $9 in shipping. So I not only do I pimp out our garage cars a little more, but I also freed up the existing two remotes that I can put in the Taco & motorcycle, so I don't have to jump out and run to the keypad anymore! Can't wait to get this stuff next week, and get it installed, I'll post back what kind of a job that ends up being, but they say it's very simple. Thought it was cool they used an 80 dash for their flyer...

i really do like that idea though, think it's pretty neat. just one of those things you wonder why it hasn't been big before now

That's cool, but FYI, I made my own with a $2 momentary switch from radio shack and some solder. Just take your remote and solder two wires to where the button complete's the circuit, solder the other end of the wires to the switch, drill a hole in one of the dash blanks, and tape the garage door opener behind the dash somewhere closeby, put the button in, your good to go. :)

Alright, should have probably followed Ben's method, but since I'm in this far I went ahead with the rest of the install this past weekend. Hooking up the unit was a total no-brainer. The remotes worked immediately, everything seems cool, and the install looks great they had the button shapes matched well for both vehicles.

Only complaint is the range sucks: I'm the third house in from the street and I used to be able to pop the door open just as I was turning onto my street, then the door would be up by the time I made it to the driveway, and I could pull right in. With these in-dash gizmos, you have to pretty much be in the driveway to get them to open the door.. I may try fiddling with extending the antenna somehow, to try to get better range.

Buy a 100 series, your garage door opener installs into the upper console. :)

funny my 100 came with the PO opener still in it :)

lexus version comes with a programable thingy, so you don't even need your opener.

What's up Bro. Just saw your post and thought I'd chime in. The installs look great, by the way for anybody who's interested.

For what it's worth, my mother in law's BMW 525's built in ones work the same way. I programmed them for her, and she needs to be within about 6 feet of the garage door for it to work. At first I thought it didn't work at all, so I re-programmed it about 6 times. Finally realized it was just crappy range.

Uh huh. Good thing these trucks have killer brakes or our garage door would have been wasted on the day my wife discovered this. :)
