Good commentary and my rig’s big 50 is coming up as well— there will be no cake or candles but hopefully it will bring home a nice buck or some quail this year; it’s reward will be a nice oil change and admiration from me.

I wish I lived closer to you. We could really have a cake with 100 candles to celebrate. It is a real testament that a design like the FJ40 could last this long. I know modern engine and drivetrain replacements in an older body always happens, but there are still many running the original equipment. Mine is one of them. I hope you get that buck and drape it over the fender and your FJ40 could not be prouder.

Ride quality will be up to par again when you put the tractor tires back on

Having a stock drivetrain, engine, steering, brakes etc, I find that stock type tire size offers best overall performance for my 69’ 40. In my case, I have the Super Traxions— love the skinny tire look as well

Thanks for all the points of view and feedback. Obviously there are purists and there are resto-modists (is that even a word?) have good points of view. I'm more of resto-modist in that I will keep it original unless there is something that will allow me to enjoy driving more hours. (like better ride, better gas mileage.) I had a stock '71 Jimmy that just beat me up on the highway and got 8-9 mpg. Consequently I drove it less and less the older I got. My daily-d is a V8 4Runner which is the best vehicle on the planet in my opinion. However I miss wrenching on the ole convertible 4x4. I note that work trucks of today (Tundra, Ford 150, Chevy) all have IFS with coil-overs and sway bars up front and solid axle w/leaf springs with airbags in the back. The jeep wranglers of today appear to have 4 link with coils in the back. So while I appreciate the 50yr old design. If t here is something better, performance-wise, I'll consider it. Unfortunately, as with many on here, budget is usually a factor.

Again, great feedback. thank all of you.

The reason I like my 71 FJ40, overall other reasons, is that it works with you. You can improvise and overcome many situations, and the truck will banter back and forth with you, agreeing with some fixes and turning up its nose at others. That is the beauty of the FJ40 and family. We love to bitch about PO but that is all part of the fun, part of the puzzle. Can you solve it? Yeah, it bites you in the ass sometimes but it's got a big mechanical heart that just wants love. That's my take, at least.

Sproggy, I was simply going to "like" your post but I love your post and I think you speak for a lot of us 40 owners
