Where are they selling the new 70s on the old frame? I tried to look that up but couldn’t find mentions of that. I know people even on here do it.

I see they buy new 70 series for the drivetrain and all that in the 40s, but I haven’t seen the other way around.

Watch the video that Tigerstripe40 just posted above. The owner of the FJ Company explains in detail the whole process.

Its not posted on their web site.
I think it's one of those 'if you have to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it' sort of things (this video says $150k).

Maltec in Germany is taking 25 YO legal HDJ-80's and swapping on new J70 bodies on and they are refreshing or replacing anything needed with new OE parts.

I knew about maltec, I also hear some internet legend/lore about some issues with that as well. No idea how true it was.

I’ll watch that, I knew all about the 40s and that, just not about the 70s. The 40s are all over in price and advertising.

Think importing an LC300 is tough? Try importing one of those Russian Hind attack helicopters...

Has there been any updates on this? Seems like it should be doable to bring in a petrol LC300 but the diesel variant probably impossible.

For CA folks, if an LC300 petrol becomes importable, the diesel version can very likely be registered in CA…. at a cost. There is a SMOG lab here that independently tests vehicles. The certification only applies to that single vehicle. There are a few newish diesel G-Wagens running around CA that have done this.

Thats interesting about the diesels. You just need to title/register it in one state as it is reciprocal.

From my travels in Asia and Russia they are much more interested in the LX600 and LC200. Kinda made me lose interest in the LC300 and I ordered a 700 overtrail.

Import the body and drivetrain and swap it onto a blackhawk chassis.

There is no reciprocity for import diesels coming into CA since about 2017.... but maybe CA to another State.

If you're willing to be "flexible" with your legality - seems like you could buy a junkyard LC200, take the vin/title and register it and put the plates and vin tag from the windshield on an imported LC300. It's pretty unlikely that anyone outside of a very small group of LC enthusiasts would know the difference. Register to a Montana LLC.

What happens if you get into a fatal accident and the investigator realizes the frame number doesn’t match? Insurance company will leave you to fend for yourself against potential lawsuit.

Of course people here are doing this already without worrying about this I guess.

In some states, it's legal to Self insure. Import one and register the vehicle there?
I'd think that if you can afford to pay to import a J300 and put the J200 VIN etc on it, you'd be able to afford to self insure.

It's not risk-free by any means. I think the insurance would be a problem. I tend to doubt that an insurance adjuster would be smart enough to figure out that it was something different from what the vin says. But it's still a risk. Might be a question for an insurance company to see if they'd insure something that isn't legally registered. They might. I've been surprised what they'll agree to insure in the past.

Illegally changing the VIN of a vehicle is a federal crime and likely a criminal offense in the state of registration. Anybody stupid enough to do this deserves exactly what they will get.

You all are making this a lot harder than it needs to be. The obvious solution is to buy a DeLorean, turn it into a Time Machine, then travel 25 years into the future and import the LC300 using the traditional method.

There was a time I would have thought that it was a meaningful risk. But now - I think worst case is you'd get a slap on the wrist fine and maybe they take your car. The rule of law isn't what it used to be.

Incoming president is a convicted felon and the attorney general nominee is a pedo. I’m inclined to agree with you.
