Hi all,

I'm new to the NOVA region and I have a 75 FJ40 from Central America that I'm trying to title and registrar in Virginia. I'm hoping to get vintage plates. Spent all day Friday at the DMV and did not have any luck.

Was wondering if anyone has tried to do the same thing in the past? Any tips you could pass along?

The only thing that I can tell you about is that you won't be able to get a vintage tag for your 40 with the year stamped in it. VA switched ove to the stickers in the later part of '73 I believe. You can apply for antique tags and they restrict the distance you can drive it and your not suppose to use it as a dailey driver. You'll also get a form to fill out stating that you own another vehicle.
As far as getting it registered it seems that someone with dmv coud help you with that.
Good luck, Tom

Do you have a title for the truck or importation papers? We need more information on why you were not successful.

I registered my '81hj47 from australia fairly easily...

you'll need the importation papers and the registration from the previous country...

in and out in under an hour (including the wait)...

I sent Timmy Tyrell who owns Convience Car Care in Manassas an email and it looks like this is something his dad, Bill may be able to help you with. The shop is located behind Blooms on route 28. My son used to work for him, tell Bill that Josh's dad sent you.

Good Luck, Tom

Thanks for the feedback. According to the DMV Site I need customs forms, proof of ownership and proof of address. I have all that, what the sticking point is the English translation of the proof of ownership forms. DMV is telling me I need either a official embassy translation or from a accredited foreign language school. They are getting that from the requirements for proof of address.

Below is a copy of the Salvadoran ownership document. I also provided an English translation which I did on my own. When I went to the DMV, a lady working there was from Salvador and confirmed the document was the ownership paper for El Salvador but the boss refused to accept it.

I was just wondering if anyone else had a problem with Virginia DMV and maybe had a solution. For importation from Australia, don't think you had the same problem.

Edit: Sorry appears I've exceed my quota for attachments. Interested I can PM the doc.

Sounds like you got a prick DMV manager.
Try a different DMV
Good luck

Chris

this is why it is a whole lot easier to explain the situation in your first post other than stating you are trying to title a vehicle from central america, didn't have any luck, and are looking for tips.

Why don't you take the title over to the police station and ask if you can have a translator help you and then sign it as an officer? Or, try a different DMV like Chris mentioned...

Sorry for the confusion, my experience most folks don't even know were El Salvador is located so I typically just say Central America.

yeah some people that work at the dmv are just a pain to deal with. When I went to register my 74 FJ40 that had the original title from 74 that wasn't in the guys name I bought it off of but I had a good regristration and all the paper work needed from him in georgia. Well the lady at the dmv said I needed a georgia title with the sellers name on it. well Georgia dont issue titles for anything 25 years and older. So She told me I was "$hit out of Luck". Well it took a couple of lawyers and a judge with lots of paperwork and a few months for the DMV to accept that it was a llegal transaction.

That last part is scary. Thanks for the heads-up.

it actually wan't as bad as it sounded. It just took a while to get some one to sign some print outs of georgia state laws that say they dont issue titles.

Now thats good news

Wow, deja vu all over again. I have a '70 that was registered in GA and no title. Went to the MVA and the woman said I needed a title and walked away from me in the middle of my telling her GA doesn't require a title on older vehicles. I finally got a hold of someone at the main MVA office who told me I had to get a letter from the tax assessment office in GA that they don't have a title for my 40. Got the letter and went to the MVA, and got the rig registered. What a fiasco. It helps to go to the "right" MVA office too.

Glad that you made it to Virginia!:bounce: Thanks for paving the way with this thread as I was just about to post the exact same thread here. My orders are in and barring last minute changes I'll be back in the US by New Year's Eve. Once you get this all worked out let me know exactly which DMV office you end up at that is decent. So far the biggest heads up is that I need to get my title paperwork translated while I'm still here so that I can save a step down the road.
Regards,
John
