Yes I like aftermarket head units which is why non-nav is a priority. But an iPad mini with cellular data can do wonders...as long as you have data and the correct interface with the stock system.

If non-nav is a priority, you're pretty much limited to 98-02. There are an extremely small number of oddball 03+ w/o nav floating around, that were originally sold outside the continental US (HI, Mexico, Puerto Rico, etc.), and you'll have a fun time hunting down a stereo fitment kit for those.

I've made do with a VAIS SL3B bluetooth interface on my 06 and been pretty pleased with the results. Others on the forums seem to be happy with the GROM or USA Spec equivalent as well. I guess I'm getting old, but I wouldn't trade my 5spd/VGRS/VVTI for an aftermarket stereo.

I picked an 01 for the atrac and no nav. I like having options. Also, i think you can put a auto locker/lunch box locker? in atrac equipped vehicle and still keep atrac. Which is what i want to do.
Never seen a lunchbox locker for a 100. Are they available now?

I feel like this is another thread where OP doesn't used the search. 600+ posts and no one is calling him out on this? I had these EXACT questions when I was in the market for 4 months+, but I used the SEARCH feature.

I did a quick search. But also, that's what I'm know for.

the main issue for me with the Nav in the 03+ is that the climate control was built into it. This would keep you from upgrading the after market nav with something modern. in my 99 I took the stock radio out and upgraded to a modern Pioneer double din 7'' screen with all the modern, blue tooth, nav, DVD, MP3, back up camera and what not. If there was some way to update the software on those old navs, that would be huge! I also weighed the 5 speed trans in the options, but the older ones were in my price range, and the 03+ were not.
How has the Pioneer worked out? I have a 98 and like the iPad/Android tablet, conceptually anyway, but I'd rather mount something that fits without having to build a housing. I will miss that sweet tape deck though.

I can vouch for this approach.

LOKKA - Automatic Differential Locker

I will add, i have not done a ton of research on this, its just something i was thinking about.

Lunch box lockers don't work unless you can make it part-time. The way a lunch box locker works is by using torque from the front driveshaft to lock the axle. In an AWD vehicle, it would essentially be the same as welding your spiders.
