Sounds like you have a plan figured out.

Over the last 22 years I’ve had to fine tune timing adjustment a lot. I used a light to set the starting point... that said, what speck do you use to time an automatic & auto distributor, converted to manual, lighter advance springs, adjustable vacuum advance, different cam, different carb? I’ve had to adjust, test drive, adjust, and drive again. Performance is great & economy is hard to beat.

Getting to the point... do what you need to do to make it run right.

Bikersmurf your tractor sounds a lot more advanced than mine (no pun intended). My mechanic always insisted on setting on the bullet. One thing I found for certain was that Toyota points are better made than some generic that I could get more readily. However, after thoroughly review the installation instructions for my Pertronix I realized I had not added the ground wire they supplied. With that in, it runs much better (had been inconsistent cutout). Putting the Aisin provided high altitude jets in along with the noted level of advance reduces shifting in the mountains and it pulls better. These motors are more like diesels in that they have a small power range from about 1,200 to 2,500 rpm. Maybe one of the superbly built motors with good balancing will spin a little better but mine sounds loud above 2,500. But it idles smooth, drives out well. I would say that sometimes starting isn't as quick as with points or bullet timing, but it doesn't take much and it is running. It is always a balance. I guess the later model cars, which certainly are more powerful/smoother, with computer control, fuel injection, etc. have all of that information sorted out. On these tractors, seat of the pants is a valuable instrument.

Now I am in Cuenca. The Amaluza I'm at is almost on the border with Peru. South end of Loja Province. Almost straight south of Catemayo (East of City of Loja). Gotta bad battery I think. Showing 9v. Must have a dead cell. Gotta buy one before I can get it started

I had bought a made in Colombia battery "Motorex" a few years ago, but I had some ignition issues, ran the battery down a few times to pretty much dead. Then the time it spent in the body shop and running down seemed to have sulfated the battery and so I bought a new battery in Cuenca "Made in Ecuador." I think it cost me around $160. Seems to have plenty of power. It was a fellow up on the north side of the airport not too far from Huyana Capac.
