Ignition timing question

I have made different trials.
Setting the timing as the haynes manual says, the mark on the flywheel in front of the mark on the window with bad results. Explosions in the exhaust during deceleration.
i have read somewhere it needed 7degrees of advance. So this is what I did, with smooth idling, good running engine.
What is the better timing for the 2 f emgine? How did you set your engine?
 
plug vacuum line(s) to distributor and with engine running at temp about 650 rpm, set timing to 7* advanced. if your timing light has an advance dial, set it to seven and clock the 2F at TOP DEAD CENTER mark of flywheel and the pointer in the window. if the light does not have an advance, set the timing at the 7* mark on the flywheel and the pointer. there is not a lot of room for adjusting the base timing. short of setting it at the factory 7*, one could set it for best vacuum, then back it off till it does not ping under a load. (low rpm uphill in a taller gear than you would normally...)
 
i didnt noticed there was a 7deg mark on the flywheel.
 
you should have a BB and a LINE...the BB is the 7* mark, and the LINE is TDC. if you remove the clutch inspection cover and roll the flywheel marks to the 6 oclock position, you can use a white or yellow paint marker to mark the line and the BB to make them easier to see with the light while the engine is spinning... HTH

A variation on this; set idle @ temp to ~650-750, then set idle mix for max vacuum. Then set timing to max vacuum. Unless you are at sea level, she would probably like more advance then 7 degrees. Changing the timing might change your idle speed, so then go back and re-set idle speed, make sure mix is still good, then play w/ timing again for max vacuum. Then take her out and make sure she does not ping.

This way you will make the most power with a little more advance.

Yes. I did it like lambcrusher said with good results. But I have been looking on youtube the use ov vacuum gauge, very informative. Your answer mekes sense thankx.
