Hi,

Yes, I know, read the forum and I did, but still struggling, for weeks, so bare with me, please.
I will introduce myself, later, not in this question:

I have a BJ40, with staring problems. Work shops says..it's the ignition switch.
So I replaced it, but still ...sometimes it start, mostly not (starter does make a clicking sound, but doesn't seem to turn).
And purchased new wiring for the ignition switch, but afraid to fit it. Why:

Wiring differences new wire vs wiring diagram (online version, bj40)
new wire has: black red, black yellow, blue red, black white and green
wiring diagram says: WL, BY, LR, BW, WG aka white blue, black yellow, blue red, black white and white green.

Can I assume that black red of the new equals the white blue?
And that green equals white green?
In my car, they cut the green (from car side) to the glow
And made a split of the bleu red, to the lights (but lights are always on, regardless of the position of the ignition switch.

Need help, been struggling to long. Any suggestions, it's hard to find someone in the Netherlands, that could advise or even help maintaining to beautiful historical car.

Thanks in advance!

Somethings are always hot. I can turn on my head & cab lights or step on the brake pedal with the key off and the lights will come on.

On old diesels you had to control the glow plugs with a switch, newer ones the computer did that and when it turned off the light you could start the rig.

If you hear a click at the starter but it doesn't turn over the engine; then the solenoid is working but it isn't sending power to the starter or the starter isn't able to use the power. Get a new starter or rebuild the one you have. I have rebuilt my solenoid by filing the big copper contacts to provide a good connection. Make sure your battery cables are good - check under the insulation at the connectors - corrosion can easily crawl under the insulation and prevent full amp flow.

Have you found the wiring diagram for your rig? That is the place to start with your wiring issues.

can you show us the exact Ignition electrical key switch you got for your 1979 BJ40 ?

there are a few uniquely different BJ4# series ones ...

as in the whole switch , back of the lower plug connector , the back side of the round top rotary switch , too

your existing HARNESS side female connector plug front and rear photos of wires and inside the front too

- the parts box or bag too

post more the
2+ photos below , this way you will help folks help you help yourself the most informative way , and that can be very helpful here ..... for sure

Hi, i have multiple wiring diagrams and also news (been fiddling with it, for a while):
I just short cutted the starter with the battery (24V), starter motor jumps and engine runs immediately.
Seems like a wiring problem, but he...one sunny day, doesn't make it summer already.
So thinking about a temporary switch in the cabinet, to do exactly what worked now. Just to see how it goes and if this was the issue.
Than I know for sure, that the starter motor and solenoid is not the issue. Could be wiring or the relay (if any).

Yes, I do have a separate button to glow. Will make some pictures later. Thanks already!

The ignition switch circuit is very simple on the diesel vehicles. It puts power onto the starter relay, and that in turn activates the solenoid and thus the starter.
If you've jumped the solenoid and it spins, then that part is obviously working.
I would begin by jumping 24V from the battery directly onto the starter relay B/W pin, to see if the relay is working.
if it is, then you just need to wire up the ignition switch correctly.

Do you have edic or a pull cable to stop?

I'm in the UK but find myself in Leiden from time to time - where abouts are you?

This "Click, no crank" guide I wrote for the 2H is relevant for the B Engines as well..
