poor title, i know, but what do you folks know about putting ifs diff parts into a solid axle? have a truetrac and gears in my ifs, which is the only thing keeping me from putting a solid axle under it....can't afford to replace those goods, and that dang ol' ifs has no flex
thanks
doug

Can't be done.

What gears are you running? I have a lockrite and 4.88's that I may consider parting with.

some yota-folk seem to think that the ring and pinon will swap..i just wonder what that means for dif. parts...thanks again for input, sucks to realize size difference....and certainly hate to dump a good setup, for an open diff... even if it gains some flex..

Not sure what you are going for, but the ifs can be made to flex reasonably. First you can ditch the swaybars, and if you can stand it, backing off on the t-bars will also help the front end move. If your current set-up is working just tweak it to work better until you can move on. The SAS route can get expensive if you start looking for gears and lockers on top of everything else. Keep an eye on the classifieds, you might find a diff to match your rear ratio for a reasonable price. And as others have said, sell your ifs stuff to make up some of the difference.

Good luck,

Not sure who quoted that to you, but if they "think" that then I am not sure how yota-worthy they are and would take advice with caution. That said, the following is what I did find about an 8" ifs front
" '03+ 4runner,'04+ Tacoma,FJ Cruiser,'05-07 Tundra,?? Sequoia: 8" IFS diff. - Driver's side - Mid-pinion - Clamshell housing - 30 spline axles - Carrier break: 3.91 and up,3.73 and down."

From erik's diff page: http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/

The problem is the design of these diffs and their internals are not swappable with any 8" solid axles diffs as far as I know. Someone else might know for sure.

thanks jynx...have shock hoops, driveshaft, and can make leaf mounts, steering box, and brakes, just have to find assembly and matching gears. friend who thought it would work has a 44 and a gm corporate 14. hasn't had yota axles in a while, but thought that it could work.
i'm just trying to get more flex, currently, with no disconnects, i can get pretty tippy (gets wild sometimes)
thanks for the link, not what i wanted to see, but necessary

trying for a good trail ride that won't suck driving to town...

No offense intended, but your friend doesn't have a clue. About the only similarity is that they both have a drop-out carrier. Carrier is different, gear size is different, pinion size is different, axle shafts are different...
