If you could only carry one knife what would it be?

This is actually quite easy. A Leatherman, period. I have carried one on my belt for a decade and I use it daily.

Me too. I didn't wear it a lot during the summer and I missed having it a lot. Now that I'm back to work I wear it everyday. In fact, I have two now. I bought a new one so i could send the old, whipped one back to have some of the tools replaced. Leatherman just sent me a new one.

I prefer the Wave. The outside blades make all the difference.

Agree with scottm, the Kabar is a great knife. The serrated edged knives that are so popular today are great around town and for camping trips but there's no replacement, IMO, for a solid knife of good steel that'll hold an edge under challenging conditions. If going to a temperate rainforest climate, there's no replacement for a machete. They're indispensable for the shiggy.

I've found the Leatherman's don't hold an edge very long when cutting through vegetation while constructing things or, as becomes readily noticeable, when butchering even small animals.

The Victorinox knives are very handy. I had an SAS pal that swore by his. He claimed that's all that he needed but I've lost so many and they always clog up with pocket lint, etc that I've pretty much given up on them. Most features are already found in other parts of your kit if you're skilled/experienced in moving for long periods through a dynamic range of natural environments.

I have seen some marine grade knives that I've admired but never enough to warrant replacing my Kabar. It fits my hand very well and holds an edge for a good while.

I'm a Spyderco fan. Amazing quality knives, many of which are made right here in Golden. Colorado. They're tough, hold a sharp edge, sharpen easily, and have a lifetime warranty. Plus, they look wicked to boot.

I love my Spyderco. My particular model has a nifty little clip extending from the top that allows it to hang from a belt loop so that it is entirely one hand retrival and operation. Damn thing is super sharp too.

Gerber E-Z Out Jr with serrated edge. It's small and light weight. One hand operation and not too expensive when I misplace it.

as far as the multi-tools go the leatherman micra is great. its a minature leatherman that goes on your keychain that way you never are without it....unless u didnt drive of course.

what do you mean if you didn't drive? i take my keys with me everywhere, including to the shower in the morning (security blanket i guess)

as for which knife to carry, that's simple, a butter knife, i can rip small animals apart with my bare hands, chew through anything you would want to cut, but i got no way of spreading the butter on my toast in the morning, except for... naw that wouldn't taste too good

I like benchmade and gerber I like the ATS-34 blades they hold an edge really well, I also have a kershaw but it is super sharp and holds an edge but it is just to brittle I have broken the blade tip off twice (dont pry with knives...but I do with gerber and benchmade with no problems). hope this helps

German hand made Puma. Got it as a wedding gift three years ago and it still holds an edge.

Lots of good knives mentioned. I've had a Puma "Duke", with a 3-1/2" stainless hollow ground blade for over 20 years. I have a lot of other knives, but it is my favorite for everyday use.

I love my Chris Reeve Sebenzas. Small for every day, large for camping. S30V steel. Pricey but nicey!

I have had the Gerber multi forever, however, now it has ceased to function. Has anyone worked with Gerber’s warrantee department before?

I've owned Kershaw and Gerber.. Not impressed with either. Kershaw was poorly built. Gerber blade was high maintenance. Recieved a McHenry & Williams designed Benchmade for fathers day ~3 years ago.. Can be found clipped inside my pocket on any given day. I love the knife for its simplicity and durability. Great warranty too.

Thought about buying the larger size but it's almost too big. The handle lacks any kind of ergonomics. Will look @ Spyderco per posts here.

I'm a Marine and the only knives I carry are the Syderco and the "Military" full serrated blade in my pocket. Even when the blade is dull you can hack through just about anything. Look on ebay under spyderco knives and you'll find all the different models at unbelievable savings. The other one I used in Iraq was the "equatarian" By Mercworx. That is a true combat knife and you'll pay for it too. PM me is you have anymore questions.

I use a CRKT M16-13T. I really like it. For the price, I would definately recommend it. Admittedly though I have no experience with most of the High quality knives previously mentioned. For light cutting IE apples oranges and the like I have a Bokker ceramic, but haven't uset it in a LOOOONG time.

Absolutely the best value in knives. I just refuse to spend big bucks for something I'm going to abuse the hell out of. This is why I love their knives, because they are great for the money.
