If you could only carry one knife what would it be?

I have one of these, it is what I would carry.

Small, lightweight, tough, auto, VERY precise workmanship.

Kinda spendy, but worth it.

SOG Twitch II. I wish I had a serrated blade though, I use it to cut ropes every day and have to keep it pretty sharp all the time to cut easily. I love the opening mechanism though, just a little flick and it opens solidly (if it is semi clean and oiled:flipoff2: )

I just ordered a SOG Powerlock multi tool too to keep with me.

Strider.

I like these $20 Swibo butchers knives. Ive skinned and boned nearly everything on 4 legs with these.
Using the right oil stone they can be sharpened like a razor;)

i carry a gerber. not sure what the name of it is, but it works nicely, straight blade that holds an edge well.

when I'm camping I also carry my Leatherman WAVE... great all-around tool. I carried it every day while we were travelling through Central America for a year. My favorite WAVE story:

The cruiser lost it's clutch slave on night on a windy, steep hill in the middle of nowhere. I limped it up and down hills for an hour or two looking for a place to spend the night, but couldn't find anything (it was the day before xmas, all the inns were full... very biblical but my wife wasn't pregnant). We spent the cold night in the truck because I didn't know where we were and didn't want to leave the rig on its own.

Anyhow, at first light I headed down to Cartago (the nearest city) and bought a slave. Very happy with myself, I stopped in to buy a pastry and cup of coffee. A little later, the food, coffee and exercise reminded me of other important morning habits. But the cafe had no bathroom. They pointed me next door the dentist's office that had just opened. By now, I was pretty eager to have a seat...

Nobody was there at the dentist, but the door was open and I could see the bathroom, so just walked in and took care of business.

What I didn't notice is that there was no handle on the inside of the door. None at all. So there I was, unshowered/shaved, in a stinky bathroom in a dentist's office where nobody knew I was actually there, and no way to open the door.

AHA!! Out came the WAVE. Between the thin screwdriver and the pliers and the phillips, I managed to further dismantle the door handle, and get at the latch mechanism from the inside, where I opened it, and let myself out.

The receptionist looked pretty confused but didn't say anything as I walked out.

If I hadn't had the WAVE.... it would have been a pretty lousy start to the day.

How did you choose your your 4x4 ? Most Japanese steel is good.:D Although I enjoyed the Ken onion Kershaw I had [nicely designed], I was'nt impressed with the steel quality. Gerbers are fair.Shrade is a good ol' faithful. My Benchmade has really impressed me. But the Japanese made Blackjack folder that I had was prolly the best quality steel i've seen reasonably priced[recommended to me by a knifesmith freind] The knife I currently cary is Japanese made, Loveless designed fixblade put out by "Beretta USA" ,I have been very pleased. All my knives are multi-tools :D , I don't baby 'em!!!

Who can argue with '' MACGIVER'' the swss army knife is one of the best to have in your pocket.;)

Have to go with my Gerber, Engineering and quality are hard to beat. Light easy to use and always sharp. 3ins Blade, went with this design as its easy to clean the mud out of

i carry this thing. i use it eveyday nearly and its served me quite well for cutting, prying, poking, stirring, levering and doing just about anything i've set it to do. its Smith and Wessons Extreme Ops Series which is made in china from 440C steel. so no, its not a benchmade or a Spyderco but its hefty size and thick blade along with its pricetag (i got mine for $10) more than make up for its lackluster specs. this is a workhorse that is probably 99.99% as good as any other knife out there and at $10 i can afford to beat on it heavily. also i should mention that it gets a lot of maintence abuse too, i've dropped it in mud and sand and done things to it that would make lesser knives cry, i've never oiled it nor sharpened it (its finally getting to the point where it needs sharpening though) i've thrown it and much worse. she still works beautifly.

I've heard that Kershaw is a branch if Snap-On - anyone know?

Doubt it . It's a Japanese knive co.

Kershaws are actually American Knives. The Kershaw Co. is based in Oregon.

And if they are a division of Snap-on, it is due to a buyout or something similar, because the Kershaw family is from Central OR, the knives are named after people and places here.
