Hey guys, I'm pretty new to the '80 series. I had a '93 pickup and a frend of mine told me to engage the 4wd every now and then if I was doing alot of 2wd driving. I know my FZJ is AWD, but should i engage it in low every once in a while with the same philosophy? pobably a dumb question.

Yes, you need to exercise them every so often. Not too often though, once a year may work. My new 80 probably never had the lockers engaged and I spent 20 minutes trying to get them to engage last weekend.

Engage! Engage! Can't hurt and it's fun ;) Just do it on low traction surface (dirt, sand, snow)

About once a month, I go out on a dirt road and put mine in low range, lock the front and rear diffs, lock the transfer case in high range also. I drive several miles, and lock/unlock the diffs a few times. I have found that by doing this, the diffs lock up quicker than when I first got it. It doesn't hurt to keep everything exercised once in awhile.

The lockers can be more reluctant in winter, (grease is stiffer) which is when I need them most. So be sure to exercise in winter too!

Oh and, excercise your a/c in winter too, the lube in the refrigerant will keep the seals from drying out, and help maintain a good charge.:steer:

how about exercising the lockers while actually wheeling - now there's a concept :hillbilly:

I know this a dumb question, but exactly how do you engage the lockers? I know I saw a post on here about it, but I can't seem to find it. I just picked up a 94 with lockers and when I engaged them the lights just blinked and never stayed solid. Of course, the person I bought it from had never engaged them since buying it in 2000 and they probably need some coaxing. Thanks for anyone with the patience to repeat some good advice. Cheers!

Never mind, I found a post from '07 on the FAQs that laid out the steps to engage the lockers. My bad...
