I'm going to be building a set of sliders next month, when I get done with this out of town job. I've been looking at transfer case skid plates and I want to build some protection for my cat into the sliders....so here's my idea...

I'm going to take my transmission crossmember out and integrate a new one into my sliders. All the other slider mounts will run clear across, under the frame. I plan to use 2x2x1/4 and 2x1.5x3/16 for it all. You'll be able to unbolt the whole thing and drop it down without messing with the tranny crossmember. I'll have to notch some of the tube to clear things under there, and I plan to use some big pipe cut into about a 3rd of acircle to guard the muffler.

I don't know if I explained it real well, but what do you guys think?

Sounds good. I'm interested to see the finished result.

Anything is possible if you have enough money, talent or time, but the golden rule is don't reinvent the wheel. You can be sure that other people have put a lot of thought into it on the basis of experience.

So youre gonna sacrifice ground clearance and run tube under the frame???

It won't be any lower than the sliders would already be, and it will only be about 1.5" lower than the frame. Other things hang down lower than that.

I'm interested to see. I love to see ppl's custom thoughts.

Ok, just askin.... My 80 sliders were welded to the frame and didnt hang below it at all so Im not getting why your sliders would hang lower than the frame. Also, all of those crossers are gonna make for nice places to hang up unless you plan on running a skid over them. In the end youd just end up decreasing your ground clearance and adding a lot of unnecessary weight/steel to you already portly van.

An ipor style skid that doubles as an xmember and sliders mounted flush with the bottom of the frame might be a better way to go.

The ipor skid is heavy enough on it's own. If you do this all as one piece it might be prohibitively heavy. The thing I like about having sliders separate from my skid is that I don't have to take everything off to fix one thing.

Yup, can you imagine trying to lift a 300 lb skid slider combo? Youd need at least 2 ppl and 4 jacks lol. Sliders w a removeable cat skid and seperate trans/xfer skid seems to be the most popular way to armour up. Just decide if the sliders are gonna be bolt on or weld on and give er s***.

I have the IPOR skid and its well designed and super strong. I use a custom setup of marlin crawlers tacoma sliders will no interferance.
