I made a rack out of some scrap lumber yesterday for my new touring bike. I was sure enough that I didn’t want traditional notched arms for the top tube to rest in. But other than that, I’m undecided.

Part of me wants to go :hillbilly: and contrast that walnut/oak combo with a piece of PVC/ABS cut lengthwise into a trough, run between the two arms. Two short sections of an old radiator hose would work too.

Top tube is 1.5”, if that makes a difference.

Cheap: stretch a section of inner tube over the arms
Sturdy: mount some Quick Fist clamps
maybe too late: Adapt the arms to accept a couple of FJ40 tow hooks.

I just had a chance to grab a tow hook off the shelf. TOO PERFECT! Almost want to build another one now just to try it!

Here's an idea. FJ40 front bib with two pieces of frame sticking out to hold the bike up.
