I new I was leaking oil somewhere, and the whole underside is covered in it, anyway. After pulling the cover, I found that I have a small leak at the back of the oil pan (big surprise) and the transmission side is side is covered in oil. I cannot even see where it is coming from. I want to take it up in the mountains this weekend, but noticed that there is a gasket on the inspection cover. I am not so concerend with the leaks as I have known about them for months and they don't really affect driving. I am wondering If I need to replace the gasket on the inspection cover, I read someplace on here that it is not water tight so does the gasket matter? and one more thing I need a clutch oh yeah one more project on the list.

You don't really need the cover: no gasket no problem.
Go drive in the mud and you will find out how much you do need the cover.

The seal is not that huge of a deal tho..

Thanks I will snug the pan bolts, and thro the cover back on ..Hopefully no mud this weekend, I am trying to get it all clean before winter

Are you sure it is the oil pan? A leaky rear main seal is just as common. If snugging up your oil pan bolts doesn't cure it, you might want to replace the seal the next time you have the clutch apart.

Sounds like you possibly have a leak coming from the front seal of the tranny. Does the oil on the transmission smell like gear oil?

I think I have all of the leaks mentioned, As for the pan bolts, some were so loose I could turn them in with my fingers. After the 80 mile ride to work it leaked about the same as usual maybe a little more(no drain plug in inspection cover) When I get time(and money) the clutch and all seals will be replaced. On a side note I just heard through a customer that a guy in town has three toy diesels in his garage, he has a couple 40's sittin out back of his place. I'm Keepin my fingers crossed that he has one he wants to sell cheap. Even if it needs rebuilt I would like to get one. Any idea on the cost of rebuilding a diesel ?? I will serach...Thanks again to all who have replied and next week I will pull the cover and get some pics of my very greasy oily 60.

foam weatherstripping

I used some cheap foam weather stripping from the hardware store to replace the seal on my inspection cover. Still no antelope.

40's are addictive ;)

You get a elk instead?
Moose?
