i'll be in the market for a dog in the next year or so...that sounds weird, like i'm buying a house or car.

anyway, what is a good dog that gets along with cats. we have 2 cats.

i don't want any type of yipty yappy dog either, but i don't want fawkin marmaduke either.

my buddy has had a couple of heelers (acd) and both were great, but he didn't have any other pets.

i want to find one that gets along with the cats and will be a good inside/outside dog.

ideas?

inside/outside ... catdog?

Oh, thats a cartoon......nevermind.

Buy, check out, or borrow, "The right dog for you" by Dr. Daniel Tortora......it goes through the different breeds' needs for time and space and exercise.......

Hell, PM me and I'll send you my copy!

I have a lab and a doberman--the lab is a big stubborn......... Between the two I love the doberman--he is low key--the lab is always jumping on you, or licking your leg, etc. The doberman likes to play but is very well behaved. If I got another dog it would be a doberman for sure. Somebody above mentioned a Jack Russel--if a small dog is your thing they are sweet.

I will never own a Doberman.....something about one almost taking my head off when I was 2 has scarred me for life. I literally have scars on both of my temples from where our doberman(at the time) put it's mouth on my head and squeezed....

FACE YOUR FEAR!!!!

My favorites are any of the German working class breeds.....They will all make you feel like a champion trainer!

ACD (Australian Cattle Dog) a.k.a. Blue Heeler. a.k.a. Queensland Heeler, a.k.a. the ugly dog from Mad Max....

Super sweet dogs if trained correctly, under the 40 lbs unless a particularly large male or overweight (ours is a medium-size male, right within the breed standard, 29 lbs. is his fighting weight). Energetic dogs that need to exercise, they'll definitely keep you fit. Very intelligent dogs that attract a lot of attention due to their unusual coloring and homely looks.

Excellent Cruiser dogs, good size, a notoriously healthy breed with no inbred defects, relatively maintenance free, but they do shed.

Pic is from when he was 6 weeks old, he's now 6 years old and by far the best dog I've ever had. It's like a combination best friend and furry son! :)

that is soooo cute, maybe ....

that is ashame that you cant own a breed of animal cause you were scared of it. Thats like saying i wont drink beer cause it made me sick once. It just isnt logical!!! I mean beer is great! we are talking about dogs!!! anyways when you get a puppy you have a clean slate to make that dog into anything you want. I know my doberman wouldnt turn on me for anything. You just need to develop a relationship with that animal and it will be fine! Doberman's these days are some of the largest lap-dogs and babies you will see!

Dogs can live 20 years and that might limit your options down the road- changing schools, spending summer in europe, whatever

I'd get a 10 gal. fish tank and some fish. Watching fish is good for stress.
Join a gym to get in shape/ meet chicks.

That wasn't the only bad experience I've had with dobermans, but the most noteworthy. Seems anytime I'm around them they try to attack me. Maybe they just don't like me. LOL Pitbulls on the other hand adore me.....best friend's gf has one, and it's the nicest dog you'll ever meet. Yet to come across a pitbull that didn't like me. Matter of fact, I've yet to come across any dog other than dobermans that didn't like me. Oh well.

It is not that Dobermans hate you. When your get around one, you obviously recall your experience, even if only sub-consciously, and the dobys pick up on that fear, and well you can guess the rest...

They really are some of the biggest lap dogs you will ever see....It is funny to see one sit his rump down on the couch, front paws still on floor and watch TV...

Ok I will call a spade a spade. Get a dog??? In an apartment??? While you go to school??? Are you nuts??? Especially do not get a cow dog of any kind. An apartment will have that thing so neurotic it will be a mental basket case. Wait til you can give a dog a proper home.
Please,
Sean

healers ich... nasty buggers.

of course being australia, i meet the working ones, not the fashion accessories ones, but they don't usually like small children, they nip, and i wouldn't recommend them to someone in a confined space

aussie border collies are awesome, but again, farm dogs need space.

i'd recommend a husky/ lab cross, cause that's what my dog is, and he's a lazy friendly puppy, but he's going to turn out over 40 kilograms, much heavier than 40 pounds.

Trying to convince someone that Doberman's are great "lap dogs" is very funny.

Good breed but plenty of bad examples floating around. One of the smartest breeds too.

the more i see eric's pits, the more i want to get one this summer....live in a townhouse w/my sister and good to have one on the bottom floor...probably will be an inside dog..just have to potty train it and make sure he/she doesn't tear up the place.....

I used to have a Doberman as a kid and it bit me also.
I would have to vote for a well bred Pit over almost any dog, i have had 2 in my life and they are awesome dogs, family members, if you live in an apartment try to find a smaller one (they run in different sizes) and make sure you walk, play and socialize it often.

i'm just going to pile on and advise not getting a dog while you're in school. they're just not compatible with the lifestyle. and i'm speaking of the time necessary for academic pursuits and partying and the often substantial costs associated with the proper care of a canine.

Rottweillers are very well behaved. Good tempered, don't get on furniture, and don't dig in the yard. :D
