I think I killed my starter

I've had similar problems. Be sure to check/replace your battery cables. I chased a lot of problems until I found a thread that recommended changing the cables out. Inexpensive fix and I haven't had any starter problems since.

sounds like all the earmarks of the classic ignition switch problem. wire in a remote start button on your dash and i bet youre golden. i was anyway and thats after chasing exact same problem through about 5 starters and two motors (stock and sbc). one of these days i will replace the ignition switch and that will undoubtedly clear it up for another 20 years.

ps if you buy another starter be sure to save your old one...it is undoubtedly fine and you might be able to get a few bucks for it later.

oh and get ready for same problem with the new starter because it almost for sure isnt the starter or solenoid.

believe me ive been there and done that.

well I took It to napa and had it tested again and the dang thing passed. So i asked if the solenoid worked and the guy decided to test it again and it failed. It wouldn't even turn. He tested it a few more times and couldn't get it to pass again. I bought the replacement and put it in on Sunday. It has been perfect ever since. So I think I got it but we will see. I gave napa the old one for the core charge. The new one has a lifetime warranty. Thanks for the help, guys!

Hey Hawk, I've got a starter up here in summit you can have for a back-up if you're interested. I may even be comeing front range this weekend... could bring it down. -M.

Thanks Matt,

You can pick up that spare tire we talked about, and see my progress.

The problem you describe is consistent with a bad armature in the starter. They work fine and then they don't. One simple test for this is to have someone hold the key in the start position (assuming that it isn't working when you do this) and tap the starter with a hammer. If it suddenly does it's job, you have a bad armature and its time for a new starter.

I bet thats exactly what it was. And when i took it out, it got jostled enough to work one more time...

new one is working fine. Sounds better when it turns over too.
