The Holley units indicate minimum tank depth is 7”, and I measure 6” depth on my 55.
My in-tank fuel pump mounting kit is far cheaper than the Holley (see ebay #255083740492), you'd have to look at the photos in my ebay listing to see if my vertical bar could be cut down enough to fit a 6" deep tank (it can be). The issue will be height of the fuel pump you supply, fitting it between the bottom cup and top hose barb fitting. ???
 
If you are not using the spare tire carrier then there is really no need to hold on to the original tank. You can have a custom tank made that is 9 inches tall and still above the bottom of the frame, buy a $60 GM intank pump and sender and still be in for less than the holley intank setup you posted. This is the route I went and I got almost 40 gallons of range. The only add-on I would suggest is a Holley Hydramat to reach those last few sips on a very wide and flat bottom tank.
 
Did Tanks Inc unit with sump set-up. I have LRG tank so my issue was opposite yours and had to lengthen so did spring loaded set-up. I mounted tank with body off. Dropping it with body on is how you break a man. Bosch pump and overall slick system. Project still ongoing so no feedback yet. Also did Kuss level sender unit.

That looks good. I see the feed, return, and vent line holes , where do the electrics come out and how are they sealed. Have you install instructions you can share?
 
I used an a stock fj80 pump and cut the pickup to length. I mounted that in the old fuel sending unit hole so that I could replace it without dropping the tank if needed ( access hole in the floor). I cut in a new hole in the tank for the sending unit. it works well but I need some hydra mat to make it better. It will starve on steep hills and sharp curves when the fuel is low but not close to empty. Honestly if I had to do it again… I would just use an external fuel pump and carry a spare. I can deal with the slight noise at idle.

Your top plate has three holes, what are those for? By my count we’d need five openings… two for wires, one for supply, one for return, and one for venting… maybe I’m missing something…
 
1. Two smaller holes in aluminum plate are for inlet (return line) and outlet (fuel pick up tube).
2. Single large hole is for sender, it is 1" diameter for a Centroid electronic sender, those using a different sender can modify that hole for their sender choice.
3. We supply the two (positive & negative) bulkhead electrical fittings (shown near top of photo above), but we do not pre-drill the aluminum top plate for those fittings since many want to install the bulkhead fittings into our polyethylene fuel cell since it does not conduct electricity- - -buyer's choice on drilling.
4. We have not put a vent fitting into our aluminum top plate since (a) most tanks already have a separate vent fitting, including our fuel cell, and (b) the aluminum top plate would get too busy???

In tank is the best way to go. The fuel will keep the pump cool and it will last longer. External pumps are pretty noisy in my experience.
Had a 40 with a 5.7 vortec conversion. It’s actually sitting at Steve’s shop atm. BTB’s setup: Fuel pump on the frame, had a return.

When I had it in Las Vegas it would vapor lock every time.

Put the pump in a @Downey tank (this is back in 2004-5) and the problem … evaporated.
