Hey guys,

I had a question if anyone has any ideas. I hit some railroad tracks going too fast yesterday and took a pretty good hit. Immediately after the truck has been incredibly loud whenever I feed it gas. Assuming it was something with the exhaust I took a look at the bottom and it looks like my oxygen sensor has been knocked out.

It actually looks like the mounting base was knocked of as well. I assume I would somehow have to weld the base back on and try to remount the sensor. Before I get to all of this. Would the sensor be what is causing all of the noise?

I half want to just redo the exhaust system, it is rusted to hell with holes everywhere. Has anyone done this and know how difficult/expensive it is?

Thanks

if the sensor fell out and you now have a hole in your exhaust before the cats or muffler then, yes, that would make quite a racket.

I think a replacement might be my summer project. There's no harm in leaving it for a couple of months is there? I guess it will run a little lean while the O2 sensor is hanging out, but will this hurt anything.

Also, has anyone done this themselves or is this something best taken to the shop?

Thanks

same thing happen to me once(o2 sensor fell out)
i used 18 gauge wire to putback it the pipe.
then the pipe broke, so i pretty much got a whole new exhaust.

ps. you might need new down pipe if its cracked

hitting rail-road track to fast

That is wierd i did the same thing on the 27th. Took it at about 30:doh:. BANG! But it still sounds the same.

You can remove your entire exhaust and hold your breath at red lights until you get a new one...

Just kidding, that's not advisable...though I did exactly that for a little while.

I've gotten lazy and am just going to replace the pipe instead of the whole exhaust.

In case anyone else thinks of trying, no amount of JB weld will hold this together.

Does anyone know what this pipe (just before catalytic converter) is call or a good place to pick one up?

Ah, down pipe, thanks Lost. Now to find one...

Bodge repair idea

Depending on where that O2 sensor is, you could try the jb weld, but I would suggest putting it on a piece of 16 gauge steel that is bent to the same curve as the pipe. Clamp it on with a couple of SS hose clamps/u-bolts and let it cure. Might give you enough miles to do it the right way. Can't think of any RTV thats high temp enough, but I'm sure there is some sort of goop in a tube that would also work, and remain flexible.

Consider getting a CO monitor and leaving it in the cab until you fix it. CO is tricky, cumulative in the human body, and absolutely fatal once you get enough of it. Remember - it's colorless and odorless, if you can smell exhaust, chances are you are getting exposed.
