I think the Toyota engineers did a great job on the 62 but the exhaust was an exception. That pipe going under the frame just was too vulnerable. Since my muffler was crushed and I had leaks everywhere I got it replaced today by a local shop that knows how to build an exhaust system. No more pipe under the frame, kept both O2 sensors and eliminated a cat. Everything is close & tight with just the downturn in the tailpipe not being under the frame. Oh, and it sounds a bit more throaty w/o being noisy with an XL Performance muffler.

None at all, he has done quite of few of these and guarantees no problems and that it'll even pass the local emissions.

Damn, those guys do clean work!

I did similar with a dual inlet-single outlet cat then to a Magnaflow all inside the frame. Its a nice set up but not as clean as yours. Soemtimes I think the Magnaflow is a little noisy & rough sounding.
I'm saving your pics if I ever have to do it again down the road.

Nice.

So do you think moving the O2 sensors closer to the engine will cause any problems?

I read someplace that moving them closer to the manifold is better. The hotter they are the better they work. They are heated, which is needed when placed further down stream.

Looks good.

Nice...

What's that diff armor you've got on the rear ?

This tread makes me laugh...with a sigh. I thought some total hack did my exhaust. I took one look at that pipe under the frame and thought 'there is NO way' but I guess there is a WAY! Toyota afterthought????

Anyway, that looks great and what I thought it 'should be'. It's on the short list for me.

I just ordered the 02 sensor bungs last week so I can finally get the front half of my exhaust done "right". I've got no cats to worry about, so it's just a matter of re-routing from the manifolds to my 2 into 1 muffler.

Are you happy having the exhaust dump under the back of the truck like that? I would be real leery of it.

what size pipe and how much did it set you back if you dont mind me asking.

Thanks everyone, I'm real happy and it's great knowing I was turning it over to someone who knew what he was doing. It cost me $600 which didn't include O2 sensors since h re-used mine. I thought the Magnaflow would be louder than I wanted to went with this one, sounds good.

Matt & Elliot, this was done by AA Performance Muffler and Brake 3898 South Broadway in Englewood 303-806-8634 when you need yours done. Scott's a good guy and it doesn't take more than a few minutes before you know he knows what he's doing. When I picked it up he asked me if I knew Ige which is probably a better endorsement than mine.

Spike Strip, the diff armor was made by a friend.

good to know!

thanks for the post...that's AA performance muffler, right? I'm glad you liked them...the 40 is going there in a few weeks.

again...you're cruiser has turned out soooooooo nice!

Yes Shawn, thanks. I added the AA and I'm sure you'll be happy. Thanks for the compliment, it's hardly the same truck now that it was when we wheeled.

Yea buds on sante fe wanted $800, but I thought that was excessive. Did they have the 02 sensor bungs, or did you get slees?

You can get the bungs from RC Engineering too, for cheaper.

I've always heard that exhaust dumped under the vehicle can work its way up into the vehicle when you are sitting still, especially if you have any rust through underneath. I thought it was generally frowned upon. :meh:

I agree with rockdoc, aerodynamics will also pull fumes into the rig if you ever drive with the hatch open. I have a 69 Jeepster as well as my 88 62. When I got the Jeepster, the PO had redone the dual exhaust to flow out the back, I nearly gassed myself driving it home from Boston to DC, I rerouted the ends, one out each side the next week. Haven't smelt fumes since.
