Anyone up for a run this saturday? I was considering checking out the area south of Ranchita (off the S-22 before you go down Montezuma grade to Borrego). There are several springs in the area with some nice groves and picnic areas. After that, explore the area south down to the 78. On the way back, head down the S2 and explore some of the mines around Rodriguez Canyon, and head over to Banner and up to Julian.

Should be easy, stock 4wd friendly (with decent ground clearance).

Any interest?

Reid, I know you guys have been in this area. what do you think?

If this doesn't work out, I may join the run up in Big Bear.

The images show the area I want to hit.

Hey Eric,

I take the Culp Valley trail whenever I come up from Borrego Springs and hit the S-22 in Ranchita (Oak Grove Ln).

Mark, Kevin and I did the Culp Valley/ Grapevine/ Jasper trail a while back. It was fun, but nothing challenging.

I have yet to check out Rodriguez Canyon.

Yeah Old Cup Valley had one off camber hill climb that was pretty easy but you notice if your rig is without lockers like mine. :( Oh and lots of pin striping on this trail. Jasper has a beautiful view at the top of the hill.
I can't join ya, I will be 80 miles out with a fishing pole in my hand. First time out and going big..... :D

Thanks guys, maybe next time. John at SDTrux did such a fine job on my LC, it would be a shame not to get out and use it. :D Sorry, I couldn't resist.

We'll catch up one of these days. You can run, but... er, something like that.

Sounds like a bunch of fun, let us know how it goes. Where are the pin striping areas? Up top by the springs and Ranchita, or on the way down to the 78?

It is the other fork of Oriflamme/Chariot canyon. Goes from the S2 to the 78 near banner. Nothing too challenging, but some great scenery. Actually one of my favorites.

Up in the Culp Valley area, near Ranchita AND on the way down to the springs.

I'm up for it

I am up for a Saturday trip. I just drove my new 96 FZJ-80 out from Kansas last weekend and I am very eager to get it down to the desert.

Possibly wrenching on Smitty's rig. Won't be out wheeling this weekend.. need to take a few weeks off. Not to mention i aint touching the desert for at least another month and a half!

What are you guys doing and where???

Thansks to Mo's help last week, all I have left to do is install the snorkel....yay!!... and then grease and check the driveshafts/u-joints. Got the coolant flushed, oil changed, blue fan clutch and extreme aire compressor done last week at Mo's. She will soon be ready for her 2300 mile voyage to the hip-hop mecca ATL.

My new career will be a solo artist in the dirty south

I also would like to bleed my brakes sometime. I have never done it before and I have the fluid. I have heard of "brake bleeders" but have no clue what they are. I have also heard of the two person method.

SORRY FOR THE HIJACK,

Smit

I hope you don't mind getting a couple of tree branch scratches ;)

I wanted to hit up the area in the map, but I am open for other suggestions. I am always looking for new places to explore.

So far, we have about three or four rigs.

I'm out -- I got recruited to take some friends of the family who are new to California up Saddleback. Should be a nice break-in for the new cruiser.

Don't get too hot out there!

So did you find out if an 80 can go through that "squeeze"? :D

Ha! No, I didn't try it.

A couple of hummers were toying with the idea

Actually, they just wanted the photo op.

chem, you need to sign up for borregofest. There are only 3 80 series representing.

I'll be there on Saturday. I didn't sign up cause I'm only going for one day.

I'll be doing the Canyon sin Nombre to Split Mtn run. What run are the other 80s doing on Saturday? Maybe I'll switch...

My plan is to get there from work on the 12th (late evening) and sleep overnight and do a run that wont break my truck but not too easy and Canyon sin Nombre to Split Mt might fill that bill. I need my truck to work properly the coming Monday.

But Im usually a last minute guy so who knows...but camping 2 nights would be ideal for me and do 2 runs would be great.

619 Toy looks like he signed up for Truckhaven on the 12th and Landcrusher70 - he has not signed up for anything yet from what Ive read.

Honestly I'm waiting to see what else might come up for Sat. I want to do a moderate to difficult run and the only run currently slated is the one running the squeeze. There lies my dillema, go on that run and have to turn around at the squeeze if I don't think I'll make it or do I take the chance? I'm usually pretty "chance-ee" but I don't know. I know there are others who will want to do similar runs as me (like Reid) so I'm just waiting patiently to decide:cool:

Edit: the majority of those going are in FJC's which are only 1.4 inches narrower than me. I have seen the video of the FJC making it through the squeeze so I definately think it is possible for me as well. However, I'm also hoping that some of those FJC owners that don't want to take a chance on marring up their high dollar rides may want a little something more challenging as well. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. There is a run I'd like to do but it's quite a drive. It's called "Knock-On-Wood" for those of you with the SoCal Guide to Backroads and 4WD Trails. It goes over a rocky area of Superstition Mountain.

I'm going to sign-up for Truckhaven and . . . ?

"Knock-on-Wood" looks really cool, but definitely too far away (from camp). I used to ride dirt bikes out at Superstition. Fun place.
