Can anyone help me source a 3B radiator for a 1981 BJ42?

I fixed a tank leak a couple of years ago and now I have a tube leak. I guess I need to replace it. Thanks in advance!

I have a complete 3B drivetrain for sale in the parts section...it has a brand new custom 4-row rad. If I sell the engine seperate I'll be parting out all the other pieces....

Last time I tried to order a 1981 BJ42 rad, they were no go. You may have to order a 1983-4 which will have the top outlet on the other side. This accomodates the move to power steering in 1983. This means you would also need a thermostat top housing, to point the inlet/outlet the right way for the new rad. Is the top and bottom not worht it now?

Maybe switch over and get ready for stock power steering then eh?

You might also try Dan and 4wheelauto. Not sure if he has 81/82 rads for the manual BJ42, but he does do exhange re-cores.

Thanks Greg and Rob!

Greg, I thought the thermostat top was reversible. No? The gasoline version has the inlet and outlet reversed. I was thinking about fabbing a 90 degree elbow on the motor looking down and then use a flexible hose under the fan shroud to the new radiator. Did you do something similar?

Rob, I'll PM you.

No, in fact something is telling me you need to change to bottom of the t-stat housing too. Check EPC to confirm.

I simply ordered new year appropriate top and bottom rad hoses, a 1984 rad, t-stat housing, and changed everything out, in anticipation of going stock power steering at some point.

Seems sometimes things re-appear in the Toyota system so double check to make sure.

I'm curious.
So Toyota switched the radiator ports around to facilitate power steering. On the newer BJ42's do they still have the water pump outlet pointing straight out to the driver's side? If so, I figure they had to make that 90 degree bend and run the hose down under the fan shroud to match up to the new port location.

I've ordered the later version of the thermostat housing. I've got to measure the bolt spacing to confirm I can drop a gas version radiator in the bracket. Then, I'll cut a 1.5 inch 90 degree bend out of any available hose and put that on the water pump. I still have the 1.5 x 1.5 tube mounted to the fan shroud. I can use it to connect a generic flex hose to the 90 degree bend and work my way under the shroud to the passenger side port. Of course, I'll have to secure the generic hose so that it doesn't rub against the shroud or anything else. The vibrations in a 3B will eat through a hose in no time. ;-)

Life is good, friends help a lot.

Switched "one" port around.

If memory is serving, and without looking at my BJ42 (not at home right now) the bottom rad connection which ties into the waterpump is the same for either. It is only the top connection on the rad to the t-stat that changed sides. The power steering pump resides on the right side, where the top coolant tube runs in the manual box version 1981-82 BJ42.

Remember, this is all for the Cdn spec BJ42's.

Thanks!
The more I look at it, the easier this becomes. My truck is Canadian and the easiest fix is to convert to a gas version radiator. A bit more difficult is to track down an early diesel rad from Rob, Wayne, or Cory and keep it as it is. I'm glad my problems are so simple. I'll share the conclusion as soon as I get the parts in.

Truely a good idea, they would kill you at the border on duty etc.

The factory unit I purchased was over 400.00 dollars new and then three hoses ranging from 20 dollars to 65 dollars.

Good luck and let us know with pictures how it went.

what i did was get the muffler shop to bend me a 90 degree pipe and ran that in between the 2 piece upper rad hose, cheap and no chance of the hose colapsing. looked clean as well.
cheers

Just to ask a question, is there anything wrong with having a rad recored at a local rad shop?, cost, reliability issues etc.I know with alot more common cars and trucks they are avaiable in aftermarket and alot cheaper, but the more rare stuff it may be a option.

Recore is a definite option if the bottom and top tanks are in good condition, I have not had great luck with recores.

One of my customers sent up a FJ40 rad new from Spectre, made off shore.

Very nice quality I must add.
