So...did you ever install the 6.5"s in the rear doors as you mentioned? Please advise...Thanks

I never got around to it. I wish somebody would settle this debate once and for all.

The ones in the lower dash? Just unscrew the grills and take them out. Less than 2 mins to remove them

You've got to take off that part of the dash they are screwed on to. The are attached from behind. Still easy though.

pioneer TS-G1641R

i just installed a pair of pioneer TS-G1641R two-way 6 1/2 speakers into the font of my 95 cruiser. i mounted them on the door panel rather then where the factory speakers were mounted. there are no problems with window clearance or grills hitting the side of the dash. it took me about an hour for the pair and was very simple with no drilling or cutting. it sounds 1000 times better then the blown originals. i will do the rest as time and money permit.

Did you drill into the leather panel and it was strong enough to hold the speaker or did you use the bracket that came w/ the speaker?

I' took my speaker out last night and definately do not want to drill anything. There is a little gap.

They dont fit. Neither do the 5 1/4" Sony Xplodes. They are too deep, even though they are only 1 11/16". Im going to some 4" speakers. I will update once I found a set I like and install them.

I would NEVER rely on just using the panel to hold the speakers. As much jarring that the vehicle takes when off-road they would never hold up. There is almost no way to not drill if you are going to go larger or use the after market grills. This is because the stock speakers are screwed in at a 90 deg. angle with the screw at 12 o'clock, 3, 6, & 9. So after market grills would look funny on the angle unless you kept the stock grill covers then no one could tell. Anyways it's only sheet metal that you will never see. You can't get a  till' you start hacking or drilling sheet metal. :flipoff2:

This is my door. I don’t know where the custom panels came from because they came from PO when I got the truck. Just so you know it is an option. The speakers I have there have at least 4” depth.

My local Wal-Mart has the Xplod XS-R1642 4-Way Speakers. I am assuming these are almost identical to the ones you installed...

About the installation, were the new speakers "plug and play" or did you have to do any rewiring?

Please provide some details about the swap. Thank you.

i just installed the 1642's up front and they fit nicely. they sound pretty good as well off of an aftermarket kenwood deck. i am about to run 50 watts to them via an alpine 4 channel and will let everyone know how they sound with some power. hope

Interesting. I found the 1642's at Walmart as well and they were way too deep to fit in the stock location for my rig. I proceeded to purchase a set of 1641's off eBay and the depth of them was much better although if I were to mount them flush the magnet would be pressed against the window channel. I took out the stock speakers and trimmed away the grill guard leaving just a plastic ring for a spacer. I used this spacer to install the 1641's which gave just a hair of clearance of the magnet off of the window channel. Both stock speakers were toast and the sound quality of the new ones is amazing in comparison.

I've heard that, too, but my 4" Pioneers barely fit...

I'm running 5 1/4" Pioneers in the back doors of my US market 1994; no cutting required.

Can you post some pics of the instal?

AHHHHHH, what a PITA...:shotts:

I wanted to go with Sony Explode 6.5" 4-ways up front and Pioneer 4" 2 ways in the rear...I can find the Pioneers no problem...but it appears that the XS-R1641 has been discontinued!!! Does anyone have advise on the new model number that will fit in a '92?

Brought this one back from the grave, I believe this topic has been discussed several times. Search and see what shows up.

Just for your info, I put a 6.5 Kicker subwoofer in the factory sub spot it bolted right in I just had to modify the pattern a little. I hooked it up to the factory amp until I could fabricate a bracket for my better amp. The Kicker comes in a couple of different versions I'm running a 4 ohm system and it just so happens thats the same as the factory amp. It actually sounded pretty good. The Kicker is the
