OK, I blanked off the vacuum hose from the EGR valve but it made no difference? Still runs rough and blows rich smoke..Bugger!

Is ur air-filter clean? White smoke is mainly due to the lack of oxygen.
Brand new filters all round. Really trying to avoid the rip off diesel mechanics who charge over $100 per hour and put the 2nd year apprentice in charge of the repair! But if all else fails then it looks like I'll have no choice.

White smoke is also due to retarded fuel timing. I think there is discussion about white smoke in this forum. However ur egr is having problem too if the glow plug light is on.

I've checked all the timing marks on all the pulley's and they all line up good so it's got me stumped big time as to why it's running the way it is..

I'll try turning in the injector pump timing by a a 5th to see if is it's due to fuel time retard..
Hey gang. Sorry to bring this up out of the dead. But looks like I’m about to drop a fair whack of coin on the last of the non v8 78s, a Dec 06 HZJ78R. This has the stupid EGR on it as all Aussie 1HZs did from 2003-2006.. wondering if you got it sorted in the end? Cheers!
