I've got OME heavy/heavy on my FJ62 and like it a lot. For my HZJ77, not sure whether to go heavy/medium, or heavy/ heavy. I don't want to be putting more leafs in later if I can avoid it. I don't run a winch, and it's on 33" BFGs.

Thanks for any thoughts.

I’m surprised this thread is almost 9 hours old without a single comment. I don’t have a 77 series but I do have a 75 series Troopy. I have OME heavy setup but with a leaf taken out of the rear. I also have a winch up front.

Thanks for that!

Hello,

Unless you intend to carry a lot of equipment, medium will do. Better is the enemy of good enough.

Juan

I run mediums with an extra leaf up front with an arb and winch. The rear is stiff enough to fill the trunk with the seat folded forward with 20 80lb bags of concrete and not be on the bump stops.

That helps thank you.

I had some pretty heavy leaf packs on my 77.

Personally I’d go heavy up front for 2 reasons being you have a diesel and it’s 24v extra battery)

Rear it depends on how much you are planning on loading into it. It’s probably going to ride similar to your 60 if you had a heavy/heavy setup.

77s have longer rear leafs as well which may argueably in theory soften up the ride a bit.

You got suspension seats don’t you?

Yep, it has suspension seats. I've got heavy/heavy on my 62 series and like it so I might do that on the 77.

Buy heavy duty all round and take a leaf out of each corner if its too hard. Put them back in when it starts to sag in 10 years.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I am in the same spot as you were. Did you end up going Heavy/Heavy and how did you like it?

I have a OME Heavy front and back in my garage waiting to be installed. I know I am going Heavy in the front but trying to decide if I should remove some leafs in the back before installing them.

I would put them in as they are , drive around for a few months and make a decision then. What if you take a leaf out and they are too soft?

My $.02 (I think again), I’m running Dakar springs, heavy front medium rear. Daily it’s great with a kaymar rear bar and now drawers. Never had an issue maxing gvm.

That would be ideal, however due to time constraints figuring out before I install it would make more sense. Especially given the springs have been sitting for 3 months. There are lots of 77 series owners, I assume I could get an idea before the install.

That's exactly the type of insight I am looking for. However I already have the rear heavys and am just trying to figure out which leafs to remove. And I am kinda in your position. Rear bumper will be built, with tire carrier and fuel can carrier. Occasional roof top tent and full time roof rack.

From my experience with HD suspension, you need at least 2-300kgs of extra load to make them ride soft. 500kgs is about perfect.
I had a kaymar dual wheel bar and bumper, plus a load of junk in the back of my troopy and it did not soften the suspension all that much.
In Australia , the 75/79 series utes are workhorses and they spend their entire life with half a ton of tools etc in the back, this what HD is made for.
So maybe you do need to take a leaf out.
And you need top class shock absorbers to go with HD because when the suspension bounces, cheapies will not dampen them. It just wears them out quick.

I also recommend playing around with tyre pressures.

^ this right there.

It sounds like you’d be best off with a medium rear. Especially if you’re retaining the sway bars.

Start by removing the second from the top in the pack.

I definitely won't have that much extra weight. Will start by taking off one leafy and seeing where it goes. I already have ome shocks all around.
