hi guys. heard it mentioned that many mine trucks have 5th gear "pinned out" or something to that effect. well i have found 2 ex miners with that very issue. anyone know how this was achieved and if it's reversible?
--thnx for any help...

Don't really know, but I would guess that they just block the slot in the shifter rail so the bottom of the shift lever can't engage 5th. Pull out the shifter and look thru the tower with a light. May be able to see if rail is blocked. John

there might be a plate simply blocking the shifter shaft. Pull the boot up and check.
where are you located?

There is lots of ways they do it.One I saw had welds on the shift rails . 5th would be easy to block off,you could even drill a hole and put a pin through the rail.
I think you will just have to have a look and see.

thnx guys! I'm on the opposite coast from you in New Brunswick. i haven't got them home yet for inspection, sounds like it shouldn't be too big a deal to get fith gear back hopefully. i should've guessed they wouldn't go thru the trouble of cracking them open and tampering in there.
-thnx agn

I've seen some that had a piece of metal welded to the floor board, preventing the shifter itself from moving toward 5th gear. 2 minutes with a grinder.

Doubt they would put in too much effort, the 79s at work have a plate that flips over the lever, making it impossible to select the gear. We have no 4th or 5th though. :frown:

yes, some locked out 5th, some mines lock out 4th and 5th, i have seen 3rd, 4th and 5th locked out.
also the high range shifter is usually cut off locking the t/case in low range.

all were easy fixes.

i have 4 transmissions and transfer cases here with the same issues
i was going to call the mgf to find out what they do to lock them out

i am hoping it is not so hard to revers

take a pic of the tranny and t/case top and sides shots ...
right now all i can see is black and orange

nah, black back ground with orange trim ...
it would be nice to see the pics though, usually the mods to lock out High range and 4th and 5th are pretty easy to reverse the proceedure.

hi guys, didn't know this thread was still alive. yes i got the trucks home and figured it out.

the t-case was easy, just a plate bolted on. the transmission was a different story. when i took off the top cover of the h55f, i found they had slid a piece of pipe over the 5th gear shifting rail. this pipe was butted against a c-clip and the casing at the other end of the rail. i took the c-clip off and tried getting the rail out so i could remmove the pipe. put the top plate in a vise and started to get rough with it. it got to the point that i was afraid of craking the aluminum housing, so i said screw it and got out the die grinder. i ended up just cutting a couple of inches off the pipe that they had in there and left the rest of the pipe on the rail. This gave more than enough room for the rail to move and shift into 5th. i haven't done the procedure to the other HZJ that i picked up yet, ill take some pics when i do.

The gears looked great and the tranny shifts smooth, not noisy at all even at higher speeds on the road. as soon as i started up the 1hz i fell in love. so quiet, so smooth and way more power than my 2H. ill post some pics of all the stuff i got in the deal very soon.
