I am going to be adding hydro assist to my Fj40.

What size ram should I use?

I am using a Toyota IFS steering box or a GM, not sure yet.

You'll need a 6"x1.5" ram. If you had posted this a week ago, you could have bought the one just sold!

Would a 6"X2" be better?
Howdy! Are you doing this from scratch, or are you buying a kit? I am thinking about this for my Piggy, so keep us posted up on your progress. I think if you make the ram too large of a diameter, that all the work will happen there, and the steering box won't be doing anything. John

Makes sense.

I guess it might start breaking things...

I plan on buying a kit.

6" limited my turning radius too much. I went with 1.5" x 8 " from west texas offroad. Measure first to get the right one.

Howdy! I think the kits are set up for either ram-assist or full hydo steer. I would imaging there is a difference in both the ram and the specific setup on the steering box between the two systems. John

Not sure if this is in the right place but im looking to go hydro assist. 78 FJ40 529 gears long fields on 37s Chevy 350 sm465 orion 4-1. Sagiaw with 3 1/2 piston SOA 6 shooters. shackle reversed. Do i need to tap my gear box and which kit would work best TG or another brand.

I have hydro assist on my 45. It came with an AGR power steering box and their rock ram. It works fine with 40 axles and 37s. They did not up grade the power steering pump so I loose the steering at low idle. The stock pump is not enough to keep up with the rest of it. I will eventually upgrade it with whatever AGR suggests. With what ever set up you decide to go with I would suggest upgrading the power steering pump too.

Yes, you need to port your steering box. I like these guys.

AGR and PSC are high quality, good systems. Just a little pricey for my budget.
