Wanted Hunting for an FJ45

Looking to buy an FJ45. Doesn't need to be spotless, but something that's in decent shape. Anything in Western Canada would be a plus (is it a big process bringing something across from the US? I'm totally clueless on importing). Looking in the 10-15k realm.

I've owned a couple 40s in the past, but have been TLCless for a while now. I'm starting to get an itch and would like to find pickup.

Anything hiding out there?

Thanks for any responses.

I've got a 1967 FJ-45, It has a 74' Chevy 350 engine needs a transmission job. Im asking $8000.00. Im in South western Colorado. Dont know about transporting it.

FYI on buddy's fj45

My brother took a week off of work, spent 1500 in fuel and hotel, and drove through 5 states to buy the tan fj45 posted on this thread. It is absolutely not what the owner says. It had grinded off vins, the vin plates were pop riveted off, rust, not original paint, big POS! Hopefully this post will save someone a lot of time and money.

Ok little more info vin plates ground off and frame number there but obscured rattle can paint over rust and pop riveted sheet metal over rust just FYI ......

Wow, thanks for the heads up. I've been requesting some pics but was told yesterday it was most likely sold.

Sucks for your brother man, I've sold a few landcruisers and that's my biggest fear is someone not being satisfied with traveling or shipping site unseen. I have hard time with someone not being anything but 100% honest and forthcoming about a vehicle.

Yes it really sucks, if anything, when I sell something, I almost try to make it not sound as good as it is...

Hey pjmhd, When I bought the truck it was sitting at a ranch. I had no problem getting a tittle for it as the vin# was on the buyers title and on the frame. I didnt even realize the the vin plates were off the body until your brother looked for it. Your brother wanted me to take off $2,000 which I wasn't going to do. As for the condition of the truck your brother told me he was very satisfied with it. It has very little rust. I thought the paint was original because it was a faded tan and I didnt see any paint underneath. As I said he said he was very satisfied with it but his only issue was that he wanted me to take off the $2,000 because of the vin plate. Although I have a buyer, I will be happy to send pictures to anyone who would like to see it. I was being totally honest and provided all the information I had and knew about it.

pjmhd02 Your brother said he wanted me to take $2,000 off because thats what it cost for a new vin tag search in the state of WA. I contacted the WA dept of licencing to find out how much it costs. I copied their reply

Who's the dishonest one pal?

where did he look for the vin plate, cause they moved it down to the right inner fenderwell under the battery tray in 67!! It was never on the firewall in 67!

Response

Well, I'm the guy that drove 1100 miles through 5 states to buy Buddy's FJ45.

Phone conversation before I made the drive. Reader Digest Version

How is the paint? Buddy....Original, looks good no repaint

Reality....Cheaply spray painted many years ago, darker brown over stock light khaki. Flaking all over, rubber seals around doors, lenses, turn signals not even taped off, paint all over. Very easy to see, Sure Buddy put pics up on here for us all to see.

Any rust in the truck? no rust other than a couple minor surface rust spots.

Reality......pop riveted large pieces of sheet metal on driver and pass rockers, easily seen with any decent picture, obviously covering rust, I did check. other spots in cab not disclosed.

No VIN tag, yes I did show Buddy where it should be under the battery, the 4 holes are there, no plate.

The V8 swap is one of the worst I've seen, but that did not bother me, I was planning a 2F anyway.

I very very very nicely with all my restraint explained to Buddy I drove 2200 miles round trip with a 40 foot trailer to buy this truck based on his description. His description was not even close, rust, spray paint and no VIN tag.

I ask Buddy to make it right since I'm there. Long story short, he does not care, I offered 7000, yes that is 1000 less than his asking for me to deal with the VIN tag mess and the obvious mis-representation. He just shrugs it off, basically acts as if my 4 days plus $1500 in expenses don't matter. Buddy needs his $8000 that is all that matters. If you guys see decent pics you will see what I'm talking about. I took Buddy for an ignorant hillbilly giving him the benefit of the doubt, I take from his response he is intentionally trying to deceive someone, he did tell me he is jobless and needs the money and will get his $8000 from someone on MUD.

I'm sure several were excited like me based on Buddy's description.

I suggest any potential buyer view this vehicle in person before purchase. He is desperate and will say anything, obviously by the lies on this thread. I dont care to debate this, Buddy stand tall and post pics and tell the truth. Does anyone believe I drove 2200 total miles to haggle and not buy?

So, learn from my mistake, should have demanded real pics from a cell phone or camera made after 1969. It cost me $1500, 4 days off work, and of course a big let down. I wanted to restore this truck.

In hindsight, I must add I'm glad Buddy did not accept my $7000 offer. I got caught up in the moment, I was so excited during the 2 day drive to buy this truck. The truck can be restored, but it needs to be completely blown apart and put back together, this is not a beginner project. I planned on spending thousands of dollars and shop time.

You are buying a FJ45 shell not much more

So I guess my big question is did you request/recieve photos of the truck before making the drive? Other than the crap phone photo(s)? I couldn't imagine driving this kind of distance without seeing many, many high quality photos of the vehicle first. I just posted another thread in which the seller has 235 photos posted. I would not hesitate to buy this truck based on what I am seeing. It sucks that the seller in your case apparently did not adequately describe the vehicle but the blame goes both ways. Hopefully this can be a lessons learned for all, myself included as I am begining this type of search for the perfect truck. Sucks again to go through what you went through. Sorry to hear.

I'm the guy that bought it....

Just wanted to post up...
Just a quick run down of the truck, better than I expected. I actually saw the post, saw the replies with the prior potential buyer. I understand everyone's opinions are different. I mean no disrespect for anyone. I just wanted to set the record straight for Buddy. It is a 45 year old rig, do I need to say much more...
Buddy sent me on request, tons of photos, as detailed of description as I could ask for, and waited for 6 weeks for my shipper to pick up the vehicle, prior to him receiving payment.
I'm no expert, nor am I a "true" body man, but what it would consider minimal body work to be done, no frame rot, basically all there...minus the original F. Oh, and minus any brakes...:-).
But, my response is only to say, I feel like I got a fair shake, description, and information from Buddy. Hell, I'm the proud owner of a LWB 45 now, I have no more worries. I have had a lot of 40's, 80's, and 100 series. This truck is a solid piece to start from for a full resto, just my opinion and wanted to say what my experience and perception of Buddy and this truck were and are now.
Buddy didn't ask me to say anything or write this, just thought it was the right thing to do.
