Trying to put together supplies for sliders. I have a stock fzj80....would the HREW tube flex too much on impacts or would they suffice? I had a tacoma with rectangle tubing sliders so the weight factor is whats at issue for me. I guess I could opt for the DOM but if I didnt have to then I could save $$$ and build more.
 
I live in texas and go to Gilmer...no many rocks....planned trips to Katemcy but dont go often.
 
For sliders I would stay away from HREW, it dents easily. You could sleeve it, then it would be alright. DOM is a much better material for something that is going to have regular impacts. The strength between the to materials is similar but DOM is much tougher. You could use SCH80 for sliders if you want to save a buck and It would hold up better then HREW (thick wall)
 
dom or hrew on sliders are both going to dent.

Do them in HREW and replace as necessary..

If weight is not a concern, do it in pipe ;)

especially for an 80!! my friends use hrew on 4runners and on minor impacts they dent and bend! In my 4runner 5300lbs Ive fallen 4 ft directly on to the DOM slider, hurts me like hell but the sliders are perfect.
 
either will work, if your cutting cost go cheaper of the 2. if it were me id go dom
 
Built 6 sets out of HREW for 80s. I have no issues with it. Just a little harder to get through the bender. Cutting it is a little harder on the saw blades.


I can't see how having a welded seam or not would impact how it dents. I was brutally hard on the sliders on my 80. no dents at all.

It's not the difference between having a welded seam or not, DOM actually has a welded seam, but it is not very visible after processing is complete.

The difference comes from the mandrel process where the steel is worked through a set of dies to attain a uniform specific thickness and OD. This process strengthens the steel and is what makes it more dent resistant.

That aside, I'm glad to hear you didn't have any issues w/ your HREW sliders on the 80 'cause that's what I plan to make mine out of.

DOM is hard to find in VA, so far ive ordered it from a race car place in NC and went in with IPOR when they got in a shipment (the latter was by far the best deal). Im not quite sure why nobody stocks anything in DOM, even the common sizes.
 
my cage is mostly made of HREW, I have not hit it hard, I have flopped a few times, the B-pillar is full of dents. I have ridden in buddies rides that are all dom and the beat on that stuff and come out with no dents. I wish I built my cage out of DOM...

Thanks, ive got a couple sticks left right now, and as often as cam and lance order tube i should be able to get in with them again if i need some.
 
You made no mention of what wall thickness you were planning on using. If you have plans to fab your sliders out of .120" wall they will end up dented no matter which process the material goes through. Go for .188" wall and you shouldn't have much trouble.

The sliders on my 80 are made with HREW 2"x2"x.25" (gross overkill) I've beat them on rocks for a full season with no dents or deformations. My sliders weigh in ~75-80lbs each and on a portly 80 an extra few lbs doesn't make much difference. The original plan was for .188" wall that would have saved ~1.3lbs/foot of material but it didn't work out.

All that extra weight seems to help your land tank :flipoff2:
 
if you use hrew for sliders run the seam in the tube down it acts as a stress point and will spread the load and slow denting. the side of hrew without the seam is actually more prone to dent. .188 wall would be alot better than .120
