Hey guys,
I made a simple DIY tool that you can make for under $3 USD to grease your spindle bearings without messing with the wheel bearing lock nut, lock washer, or wheel bearing pre-load. This is great for annual services between wheel bearing repacks. The video is linked down below and it covers the entire process. The DIY tool lubricates the spindle bearing exactly the same as the slee tool besides the wheel bearing jam nut part. If you have any questions / comments let me know. Hope this helps you guys out.

Well done video and the tool is great!

This is good!

Sorry for the bump.

Dumb question. What is this grease actually lubricating? It the grease being pumped in getting in the bearings?
I am foggy on what this does.

Also, once the grease gets pumped in and starts coming out the back, do you wipe that or leave the globs back there?

There’s is a needle bearing in the spindle that the CV axle rides in. This tool is to grease that bearing, not the wheel bearings.

Just wipe off the excess

Thanks for sharing this. Great idea. I was going to make one with the spindle thread (M42x1.5), but I like how the nuts can stay in place with this method.

I made a simple mod (photo). I found this easier than using clamps and provides better access/visibility. Oh, and I sanded the face flush because it had some embossed lettering that caused grease leakage.

Somewhat old thread revival.... Thanks to the OP for sharing this. Used this method yesterday in my process of base lining the '04 LC I picked up about a month ago. I was planning on picking up the Slee tool but this was so cheap and easy, and the best part is that you don't have to mess with the hub bearing preload. Less than 20 minutes per side. This will be my go to method in the future.

If you use the Slee tool, you do not even need to remove the wheels. Just remove the center cap, then the hub cap, screw on the grease tool and spin the tire as you grease the bearing.

No not yet. But from all of the research I have done it can be done that way, without removing the wheel.
I know everyone always removes the wheel, but I do not see why you must.
And if someone has tried and I am totally wrong, please correct me.

I've found its difficult to remove the cone washers without removing the wheel, although I usually use a brass hammer on the perimeter of the drive flange to get them loose.

That video shows removing the outer spindle nut to thread on the tool and that does not have to be done with this method.

Plus this tool is dirt cheap, I'm into it for about $1.25 for the PVC cap and I already had a grease zerk floating around in my parts bins.

How often do we need to do this?
