This is just for information's sake, since I had to pull mine out to check it but couldn't find any real write-up on how to do it beforehand. Hopefully this will save some people a few minutes of searching or confusion.

I don't have any pics, but assuming you installed it in the first place, you'll probably know what I'm talking about.

And who knows, these instructions can probably be adapted to Aussie/Lockrite/other lunchbox lockers too.

1) Remove the 12mm retaining pin and the pinion shaft from the carrier.

2) Those spring-loaded pins pushing the drive plates apart have to be retracted. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry on the side of the pin so it moves away from the other drive plate. Lever it far enough to slip another flat head in and push it all the way into its home drive plate. Secure it with the chunk of wire, just like during the install.

3) Retract the remaining pins using the screwdriver method and insert the retaining wires so the drive plates are floating free.

4) Stick a flathead screwdriver in the space between the non-ring-gear-side drive plate and the axle plate and work around in there until that spacer thing backs away from the axle shaft and you can dump the c-clip out.

5) Slide the axle out 6 inches or so.

6) Remove the non-ring-gear-side drive plate and spacer. Remove the axle plate.

7) Now remove the other drive plate and spacer, remove the c-clip, slide out the axle, and remove the axle plate.

When you checked it, did it look like this on your 3rd?

That's mine AFTER the Spartan was installed and removed.... :bang: Hope you had a better experience!

I took it out as part of the installation because one side wasn't ratcheting properly, but I wondered about exactly that. Those grease shim things from the stock axle gears didn't look like they would fit between the 3rd and the locker plates and still leave enough room to ratchet. So I didn't put them in...

Do you have to replace your 3rd? I'm 5 miles into the locker and happy so far but sheesh, that looks nasty.

The original Lock Right units retained the OEM side bushing/washers. Never saw any of them have this problem, but the brands that eliminate them do seem to have this show up. Hmmmmm:hmm:

Yep, had to get a new 3rd. Had some help from other mudders putting it in, did NOT use the shims (per their directions), directions said it'd make some noise when installed, so I opted to leave it in for about 15 miles, maybe 20, waiting for noise to stop. Never did, so I got really nervous and took out the Spartan. That's what was left of my 3rd.

Contacted the company, who promptly told me it was installer error, and that they wouldn't so much as replace the bits of the locker that also got mauled, much less take any responsibility for the 3rd.

Maybe you'll have better luck, and I honestly hope you do. As for me, IF I ever get another locker, it'll be an Aussie. Spartan won't ever get another dime of my money, same with Randy's.

Wait... Yours got trashed after only 20 miles? I've just put ~280 on mine...

Correct. Drove it home after the install (some interstate, some in town), and then to work the next day, then yanked it. That's how fast it happened. I really think Spartan thought I was lying through my teeth about the shims, but we never put them in. Heck, there would've been NO room for them. I really expected they'd replace the damaged parts, even if they didn't admit any culpability on the 3rd. Nope.

No worries, I'm seriously concerned now. It still drives just fine, no extra noise... Maybe you got crap in there that ripped it up, or the face of the gears was machined poorly?

I noticed when doing a final check-over after the install, there is still about half a millimeter of lateral play in the axles. So 1) it's not physically possible for the shims to even fit in there without some modification of the axle, and 2) it could be that tiny gap is what is intended to keep from ripping the 3rd apart.
