Hello everyone -

02 LC w/ 158K - stock, no lift. I'm not a mechanic and just starting to turn wrenches.

Just curious if anyone can point me in a good direction to help me figure out exactly how to refurbish my CV axle assembly. Current CV has a torn boot and questionable functionality - I'm buying a new Toyota CV axle and plan to refurbish the old one and use it for the other side down the road. I've searched YouTube with a few videos that are helpful, and there's not too much here on MUD about restoring a factory unit (correct me if I'm wrong). Obviously, it needs a new factory boot, but finding the internal parts, or axle shafts (if they're bad) is proving to be difficult. Also, type and amount of grease, etc. Just would like to get some pointers for the 100 series CV's if possible.

Thanks a lot!!

Here is the main cv thread. If your old axles weren't clicking, you should be ok to just regrease and reboot.

CV Boots Replaced with directions
So the old axle came out, and the new one is in and the rig drives like new. I can grab the center shaft with one hand (gigidy) and then grab the outer shaft and pull the outer joint apart creating a clicking noise and the joint has about 1/8+" of slop. I'm guessing that's not normal and it should be tight all around? Is it worth it to try and refurbish that axle?

Axial play is fine, radial play is bad. Motion per the arrows in the picture is expected but you should't have slop when twisting.
If the shaft has radial slop under torque I wouldn't try to replace any parts, just dump it, but if it does pass then re-grease and re-boot it.
Toyota kits include the right type and volume of grease so use their boots and grease kit but most of us use worn drive clamps instead of the factory clamps.

@abuck99 did you get that picture from a electronic FSM?
