Hi,

I bought myself a used 3L Toyota engine. It looks like this:

As you can see the lower section of the engine has some rust.

I would like to paint the engine and make it like "new" again. Can anyone recommend a way of doing that? The plan is to remove as many parts as possible and start the cleaning of the engine. My plan was to cover up all holes and sandblast the engine block, oil pan without completely fragmenting the entire engine. But then I read that MANY people strongly advise against sandblasting.

Was is the best way of cleaning that engine? And I would REALLY like to avoid using wire brush solutions :).

Hi!

I absolutely agree to not sand or shotblasting the engine. The likelyhood of any debries finding its way into the engine is very high.
If U can, run a rotating wirebrush on a drill or similar, U should be able to get most of the rust off. The rest I would treat chemically then degrease any remains before U put on an engine paint of U`r choice.
FWIW; I have at least done it this way on 4-5 different engines in my private collection :) Using different paint sources & application styles.
