How do I determine what year and month my 40 was
built? and if it's a fed or calif model?
Thanks

Search....You will find a chart that will tell you.

The VIN on the door plate will also tell you, if it's there.

A California Emission Standards Rig will have a Black label under the hood on the passenger side.

A Federal Emission Standards Rig will have a White label under the hood on the passenger side.

Is it the one on the pass inner fender well right behind the battery?

No it is the decal on the hood.

Top left corner of these pictures shows them.

The Blue 1976 FJ 40 is a Federal "White Label".

The Red 1977 FJ 40 is a California "Black Label"

Well mine is painted over so does that mean I'm f**ked when I go and get this smogged?

LOL! Are you in California?

Most shops do not know the difference between Ca and Fed stuff.

I'm in Los Angeles, the truck was registered at one point before it was put into non-op, that was before I acquired it. Maybe the PO had it "pass" with a friend, that's not uncommon. I just want to do it legit so I won't have to worry about it in the future.

You'll have to worry about it every two years in CA, depending on the county. Did you determine what year it is?

According to the plate on the drivers side door jamb, it's manufactured in Oct 76 but I'm still trying to figure out if it's a fed or cali model.

Are there any emmission components on it at all?

May be able to identify it if we could see some pics of the engine compartment ie distributor, carb #s etc.

Here's some pics of the distributor, carb and some of the smog equipment, the carb has 6h5 stamped on it. Anything else? The problem I am afraid of is when I go to smog this, the smog guy might flag me a gross polluter for not having the proper smog equip. I rather try to make it right before I smog if it's feesible.

OK you have a California regulation build from 8/76-9/77

The reason I say this is;

If you had a 1977 Federal version your surge canister would have two little white canistors mounted directly to it and they would have pig tail wires coming out of them.

A California Version is a single units and is seperate from the surge canister.

I have this mounted on the drivers side fenderwell that is not connected to anything, and it looks original.
