How to fix a Locker - with Pictures

Okay,

I am losing my mind. I have tried every combination for the magnets to make the actuator fire (they were all unglued and got removed without marking them).

Does anyone KNOW what order they go in? I know the concave sides of the magnets have 2 pair...I just need to know what orientation to glue them back in...

Here is my locker story from this weekend on my 93 80. I locked my front and rear diffs on the trail Saturday night. All went well on the trail but when I got back on the road I couldn't steer. The lockers were turned off. I cycled the lockers on and off and you could here the motors doing there job but still EXTREMELY difficult to turn. I limped it back to my shop thinking I lost a birfield. Sunday morning I pulled the shafts expecting to find some carnage but they were fine. I pulled the locker mechanism off and found the gear inside the diff still in the locked position. I tried moving it with my finger but it was locked solid. I tapped it with a screwdriver and hammer(love taps really) and it disengaged and now it moves freely.
My ? is why did it stick? Plenty of gear oil on it. Is it possible it overengaged jamming things up? your thought would be appreciated.

Sounds over engaged.

So the FSM tells you that you need to lock your actuator before servicing it. This is because the travel for the pinion is all related to the locked position. If you have ever had your actuator out unlocked, etc you have to lock it, pull the actuator, make sure the inner teeth are to the left of the hole and the right edge is centered...then insert the actuator with the gear between 0 and 5 degrees of the mark on the outside of the gear on the actuator.

I ran mine "out of phase" and had similar experiences with what you described. The actuator would unlock, but the pinion was still caught on the edge of the carrier because of the misalignment. If you fix yours with simply repositioning your actuator, bravo!

I'll give that a try as I just threw it back together in the unlocked position. I've owned it for 2+ years without a problem but thats not to say the PO didn't mess with it. Thanks for the info.

Thanks so much. Today my front locker don't want to work. It have 2 or 3 months that I don't use. I see the post take out the actuator. Clean it. Clean contact. Mount again and now the front work again and inclusive faster than the rear one. Haha. I must to take out the rear one and made the same maintenance. This forum is great. Thanks so much to all people that post here.
