I'm trying to fix the leak on my powersteering pump. leaking froze up my smog pump. Will get smog pump fixed but dont want to install it with a leaking powersteering pump...

Danimal, you mentioned a gasket when you were here. Where is it exactly?

anyone have pics of this?

There is a "gasket kit" you can purchase from SOR or Toyota, it's a bunch of o-rings. Read though the disassembly procedure in the FSM for the vane pump. Full disassembly is not for the faint of heart. There are a bunch of little springs that will fly all over your garage if you're not careful. Toyota part number for the kit is 04446-30010.

Note: be careful putting it back together. I've snapped some of the through bolts trying to torque to spec per the FSM. I suspect that the FSM torque spec is incorrect. BTW, the through bolts may be no longer available and it's not a bolt that you can get at your hardware store.

So how did you fix the broken "through" bolts?

I didn't. One time I was able to get them from SOR @ $25 per or something. The next time they showed up as discontinued. There are actually two different length through bolts. I think I was able to get the longer bolt from the dealer and I used a washer to space it out to make it work in the shorter application. Anyway, I ended up purchasing a new OEM pump and gave up on the idea of rebuilding...

The gasket is the "O" ring on the bottom of the reservoir. It comes in the powersteering pump rebuild kit.

If you just need the o-ring that seals the reservoir to the pump, you can purchase that separate from Toyota, and it's a pretty easy repair.

Try you top reservoir "O" ring first. You can do it with the pump on the rig. You will have to remove the pulley so have your pickle fork handy.

IIR the entire "rebuild" kit was around $40.00 from Cruiser Dan. It is a bag of "O" rings. Not hard to do as long as you have some needle nose pliers to put the wiper back in. Those 4 springs per wiper are the debil.

Make sure after you get the belt off that you have no play in the input shaft. If you do, the "O" kit will not do much for you.

It will take you longer to R&R than it will to re-"O" ring the pump.

You will have one little "O" ring left over when done.

Oh and are you supposed to have the little o left over?:D

Cheers...

I have rebuilt three pumps and have never found a place to put it. I think it goes on the backside of the brass adaptor that goes inside of the pressure line. It does not look right and none of the ones I ahve taken apart have had it in there.

There's a place out here by where I live named "King Bolt".

I'm not kidding you, but they must have a million different type of bolts.

If I break one when I do my pump, I'll see if they have it and let you guys know that they have it available and maybe get a part number.

Let us know. It's a very special bolt. It has an o-ring grove about 5mm or so below the head of the bolt. That portion of the bolt may even be a slightly larger diameter than the threaded portion.

mine used to leak like crazy and seized my smog pump as well. i ordered the rebuild kit from napa for about 20 bucks but never had the time to use it since she's my dd. i started using the lucas ps fluid and after about 6 mos. it stopped leaking. i used to add fluid every week or two and haven't had to add any in several months. they advertise that it will recondition seals and i was skeptical but used it anyway b/c it's much thicker and i thought that would at least slow the leak but it seems to have stopped it altogether. just thought you may want to know.

I had a leaking o ring im my hydraulic steering this past weekend and I had nothing to fix it with so I just added a little brake fluid in the pump and I guess it swelled it up bc it stopped leaking now whether it was what fixed it or luck but it did stop
