Thought I'd bump this up. I've been thinking of trading it for a 40 lately. But I don't think I'd be able to let her go. I've got some updating to do to this thread.

I've offered my unsolicited opinion, already :) but the right decision, for now.

You have a mid life crisis to look forward to and there will be plenty of time to be irrational. Hahahaha.

Here is a recent picture of my rig. You will notice that the flares have been removed. Mother Nature was kind enough to do that for me at no charge!

Next is the Baja rack up top. I picked this up from an expo member in seal beach for $400. Pretty awesome deal if you ask me.

Ok, so I have some serious updating to do on this thread. But we are going to change directions a bit. It is now less of a "How much money" and more of a "How much fun". I have got the cruiser built just about the way I want, still more things to do, like gears etc. But it works for now. I will post up what I have been doing with the cruiser since my last real update in February.

First thing that happened was I lost my exhaust. Literally. I had banged up the muffler pretty good on one of my previous trips to big bear, and I knew there was a crack in the exhaust pipe from the muffler. I was out in the desert one weekend, cruising along at about 40 mph and all of a sudden it sounded like I was next to (insert loud machine here)! I got out and looked under my truck to see the muffler dragging along in the sand. So I let it cool and then took it off and packed it out.

The next big even in the cruiser was a trip out to johnson valley (king of the hammers) area. I went to meet up with a group of FJC guys (why do 80 owners never want to wheel?) to tackle some trails.

First obstacle. Not sure what happened but I managed to spin the rim inside the tire on this one. Got to the top and had to swap tires.

Some more wheeling

And here is where I earned my big boy pants. I mangled my first flare. There is a video on youtube somewhere showing what happened. Long story short I was coming through a V notch and the front dropped down suddenly. Flares were the weak point and so off it came!

Post flare loss wheeling

Wouldn't you know it? That same day I lost another flare!

this was enough incentive to take them all off when I got home.

The day consisted of lots of carnage. There were a couple broken tire beads, a CV axle, and t case support, and a few other things. It came time to finish the trail, and the last obstacle is called "death row" it was at the top of this obstacle that I noticed my sway bar had been ripped off my front axle, severing my brake line in the process. I had to vice grip my brake line shut and precede down said obstacle with mainly my E brake. It was a lot of fun.

Stay tuned for the next update, it will include my trip to Moab!

I wanted to bump this up and ask for some info. It is now time to re-gear. The front diff blew up last weekend and so now I have no option. I will be going with 5.29's. I have decided to tackle this project with the help of my buddy who is a certified toyota tech at the dealership.

Please share your knowledge of diffs and regearing with me. TIA.

Jon

Dude, impressive. I think you got a great price/negotiation on your rig to begin with. It looked good out of the box. What I gained was what you did selling of what you had leftover. For me it's usually destroyed like my running boards but still there is a gain to be made on any part that is still workable.

Well, I guess I am going to bring this thread back from the grave. I sold this 80 series in 2015 shortly after the birth of our second daughter. At the time I was working on my undergrad and looking for work after transitioning out of the Marine Corps.

7 years later, there hasn't been a day go by that I haven't missed this rig. lots of life has happened, but I lucked out on a local 80 series that will be a black slate and something fun to build with our 4 kiddos.

Stay tuned for pics in the next couple days of operation blank slate.
