Not quite sure how to to adjust the alt belt on a 62. Pointers?

There's a bolt on the alternator sticking out, I believe it's a 12mm, just tighten it and it will tighten the belt against the alternator. There should be two belts there, so it will tighten both of them. There is also a pivot on the power steering pump which uses one of the belts on the alternator and you can loosen that pivot and tighten it as well.

Thanks, didn't see that one, but I'll give it a look. Is there a locknut that needs to be loosened?

always loosen any bolts/nuts that hold the item in place before you adjust the tensioner or you will bust off the long tensioner bolt. sometimes you need to lossen the pully nut or the pivot for the alt or whatever, but there is always something to loosen 1st

on a 62 I really forget what is what.....but access sucks

I just put all new belts on my new to me FJ62. The man speaks the truth. I don't think you could design a set of 3 belts with a more confusing configuration or difficult to access mount bolts and tensioners.

As I recall, the alternator is driven by both of the wider belts, and serves as the primary tensioner for only 1 of them. So...You should remove both belts and set it back to factory tension-first the inner belt and then the outer one with a different tensioner. There is a logic to it you don't get until you take a set off and put a set back on. If you are going to all that trouble, just replace the belts with new ones from Toyota. I think this "simple job" cost me 2 1/2 hours of Sunday afternoon.

Also, adjust the ps pump tight before you start tightening the belt with the tensioner on the alt.

What I was missing was a the pivot bolt (locknut) on the bottom of the alt. That was hard to see. The A/C bolt was freaking tight! Had to get it started on the A/C compressor, then turned the crank with a big crescent wrench. Also, I found out the hard way how to put the bar that connects the Alt and Smog pump... I put it on backwards, and when I started the truck, it made a godawful sound... The blades on the alt were hitting the bar. Ouch. All good now though...

I currently have my '62 in the garage with the water pump pulled out. I can now see some things about belt adjusting that I could not see last time I tinkered with 'em. Belt adjustment on these things is a bearcat!

FYI, rfj62 has posted an excellent missive on replacing FJ62 belts. He offers some good advice. I wish I had had this a while ago. :D

I was into this whole thing a few months ago. I replaced all the belts when I replaced the radiator. Then, the water pump went out! Now I'm back in here again!

I discovered that there is an adjustable idler on the largest belt. Mine happens to be broken, so the fact that it is adjustable sort of escaped me last time. I used the PS pump to tighten that last belt. Live and learn!! I know the system a little better now!!

If you are going to replace the belts, go slow, study carefully, use WD40 on the threaded parts, and make sure you understand the tensioners. They are tedious, but there is a method to the madness.
