How slow are these thing really?

Looking at buying an FJ62 with only 155K. It appears to be in great shape, other than some minor rust issues. The interior is immaculate, and I'm gonna pick it up for $800.00. I drove it the other day, and it is SLOW as all getout! Almost like something wrong with it slow. It is NOT missing or running on less than 6, It starts right up, idles perfect, etc. Is there something major I should look for before I fork over the cash? TIA

The kickdown cable for the tranny might be loose. Is it upshifting too early and never downshifting when you floor it?

CONS: These vehicles are not designed for lots of acceleration and are not designed to accelerate to 70 mph quickly. Also note that the history of this engine dates back to an american tractor engine.

PROS: I can beat my friend's '94 4Runner up any grade. The engine has great torque and lives forever. If you want something faster get a v8 Jeep Cherokee.

I'd recommend trying to test drive another 62 to get some sort of comparison. Yes, the 6X series are NOT built for speed.

They are slow. My 62 will do 0-66mph in 16.5 seconds, a more normal time for a 62 on 31's would be ~20 seconds.

That is down hill witha tail wind from St George Utah all the way to Las Vegas, NV.

My 62 isn't gonna break any land speed records, but it will cruise 65 mph down the interstate without too much of a problem. If I wanna go fast, I'll take my 5.7 Tundra for a ride. Although for some reason, I enjoy driving my gas eating slow 62 way more!

Im running 35's and have 230K on the clock though too. If I have a FLAT surface, I can cruise at 65 or 70 without issues turning 2200 RPM's, but as soon as I hit a grade...FORGET IT!
Where it shines is OFF ROAD. I forget momentarily about how much I hate the lack of power.
FWIW, 800.00 for that low of mileage is a STEAL!

What was the maintenence like from the PO?

A few simple tricks would likely build real life into that 62. When we bought ours, it was a one owner with 72k miles, and pitifully weak. Actually, I should say it was our second or third. It'll now do well over 90 easily, flowing with traffic from South Padre back to San Antonio on a sunday morning in 100 degree heat with the air as cold as it'll go. Certainly no sports car off the line, but there are ways to make it run without a single bolt on.

My 150K plain stock rust bucket will do 85 without complaining, will overtake other vehicles on the highway, will maintain speed on steep grades. it's not a sports car but it's no slouch. If you expectations are reasonable and it still seems to dog it, then adjust your kickdown cable until you're happy. As mentioned above, if you put your foot to the floor it must downshift. If not, the cable need adjusting.

I got 94 mph out of my carbed ,factory unsmogged 3F in my 73 series once. After that the cam was worn and compression dropped off in 5 cyl at 170000 miles

I think it was the carb that I had rebuilt. Best $230 I ever spent

Its not fast by any means but I never feel like I'm slowing up traffic. With my 33s and 3.70s, 75-80mph isn't out of the question. Since I replaced the head, going up hill isn't even to bad. If course this is a 60 with a manual and not a 62 with and auto.

Just as out of tune carbs seem to hold back a lot of 2fs, the tranny seems to be the first place to look on a performance lacking 62.

With a V8 a 60 will get up and go. With a 2F or 3FE not so much get up and go. And with a modern (fuel injected V8 you don't loose any mileage compared to the 2F/3FE. (at least after the first month of the conversion, those first few weeks are full of burning up your 33's and speed runs to impress your friends and neighbors)

On recent trip to Utah I got going 75 on accident because my contact fell out of my eye and I needed to find it so I could see. Anyway, It was scary and slowed back down quikly. Everyone was passing me because the speed limit then was 75. I think the RPM's were up in 3500+ at that moment. If I need to go fast I take the Porsche. If I need to go anywhere I take the Land Cruiser.
