How much weight can this take?

I suspect it would easily handle what you have planned. If you have need for an OEM hitch, I have my old 97 LX450 hitch waiting to give to a new home. I'm in Phoenix.

Shortening the 2x2 as much as possible will lower stress as it limits movement. That's a good thing. I've seen the pintel used to haul a mil surp trailer full of scrap metal. I'd have no hesitation to use your set up on the hiway, but I'd think twice about it's use on rough roads at speed. My cooler rides inside

On my 97 there is more than enough room for me to put a grade 8 washer and nut up there. I have been known to pull over 2 tons offroad with it, no problem. Not sure if the rear cross member is the same between 92-97.

Just got to thinking about when I hung that hitch on mine. The upper 2holes in the frame are NOT threaded, but they had weld nuts tacked on. The welds on mine did not look healthy, so I knocked them off with a cold chisel and replaced with fresh high grade hardware and torqued them to spec.

I am going to check mine; I think at least what I will do is add some grade 8 nuts behind them. I have another plan just for peace of mind; if I can get it done I will post it. How hard is it to get the step-plate off of the rear cross-member?

Used the HF cargo basket on a trailer (removed from 2x2 tube and bolted to tongue). Its actually pretty well built and worked well for me. Probably going to buy another one.
