I've got a 76fj with a very tired and 43 year old chevy 283, otherwise it's a stock drivetrain. I'm going to put in a new motor. The search function revealed a few people arguing for a lot of hp, up to 400 hp. My question is just how much hp/torque can the STOCK drive train handle? I'm running 33 inch MT/R and 4 inch lift. This is for a daily driver and occasional off road use. I'm not a rock crawler. MPG is not an issue. Thanks, Dave

Alot depends on how hard you run it. I have seen stock F/2F engines break axles. Then again I had a '74 with a turbocharged 350 putting 600 hp to the wheels and never broke any of the stock drivetrain. Maybe I was just lucky. The v12 in the '68 I have now hasn't broken anything yet, at least not from the clutch back.

yup,

Im my 60 i have busted 2 rear axle shafts and 1 birf with my all stock and very wore out 2F first axle was with a locker and 35s out back and 3.70's 2nd axle and birf was locked front and rear with 4.56's

A buddy of mine (and a member on this board) busted a front birf with open difs in his 100% stock FJ62

so id say it all depends on how you drive em.

I wheel my 60 and enjoy crawling with it and often times try to go places i shouldnt.
that said sometimes im a little more than hard on the old girl.:meh:

Thanks for the input. I'm getting the picture. I think I'll go for some old fashioned gas guzzling power. i drive "the Mistress" (wife calls her that) with respect, usually.

i drive mine fairly calmly with the big tires and sbc . or should i say how i should with the axle combonation .

keep the front tires straight when you do something stupid and don't get the vehicle hopping .

i will buy chromo's all around next year . but for now im doing fine just driving calmly , it has involved winch use a little more then it should but it keeps the interior cleaner with no top and doors .

ran a 501 caddy and a 455 pontiac ho on the street for years back in the 70s no 4 speeds or disc brakes.the trucks were way fast with dunlop l 60s on all 4 corners .sheared the rear drive shaft bolts once .they will take some abuse but will break if hammered on .good luck
