Yep, got my bill for the motor swap too....Supplied a SOR rebuilt 1F, they had my old blown 1F, and supplied all the misc parts to put the new 1F in. How much $ strictly labor would you expect for them to install new 1F and get it running?

If I can do most of a swap in a day, a bonafide mechanic should be able to do the complete job in that amount of time, so at $80-85/hr it should be less than a grand.

Your mechanic knows how much you paid for that SOR engine. And the shipping.
Figured you were an easy mark. So he doubled his rate and tossed in a boat payment.
He should be happy to get 2 grand for the job, and should throw in a free valve adjustment and tune-up at 100 miles.
Show him this thread, he should be ashamed of himself.
Perhaps if we organdized a 'Cruiserhead get-together at his shop, a la K-9crazy,
he would have a hard time saying "5 grand" with a straight face and your negotiations may go more smoothly. A hoard of knuckle-draggers in built rigs watching your back really adds to your street cred.
Or, perhaps if the mechanic has a nice lawn, the Knights of the Iron Pig could treat him to a mid-night doughnut party, and leave a horsehead in his bed.

My Alldata quotes a complete engine swap with no transfer of parts at 9.5 hours...that's one out and one in.

Back when I had money I paid a shop to pull my engine, tear it down, get it rebuilt and reinstalled for about $3400.
$5000 to install an engine and transmission? Was it done by surgeons and lawyers? Or maybe a governmental agency? Sounds to me like his guys were filling all their unoccupied time turd polishing your project. Wasn't the intent that you save money by him doing the job on an available time basis?
I'd tell him that I will pay no more than flat rate hours times his shop rate. Anything over $1000-$1500 is robbery - If he demands more than that, report him to the AG or the appropriate state agency in your state (called the Bureau of Automotive Repair here in CA)

How did he figure 1K in TAX and shop supplies ?? If the bill was 4K X probably 6% = $240. The rest for supplies ?? 
When I was a mechanic, I think the most that I ever saw charged for any custom engine work was around $1800 for labor. I think the dude laid the pork to you.
Dude i don't have say anything, it's all been said. What ever your mechanic was smoking , Can I get $10 bucks worth.

Or, are we talking about an engine setup that is about as technical as a large lawnmower, or small tracktor. There's no fancyshifting trannies and weird sensors or turbo intercooling. It's an F'n 1F.

A rebuilt longblock does NOT include accessories, so time would need to be added to clean and regasket manifolds, water pump and thermostat, swap over clutch, yada yada.
I quoted full R&R conservatively at 20 hours, including pulling and reinstalling the seats and the tranny hump. If I take longer [and I already have] I do not intend to charge more than the 20 hours I quoted.
So, the only question in my mind is, does his hourly rate cover a hooker as well?
