I'll let you know after i replace my timing belt this weekend. wife was driving and the engine just shut off. she was going maybe 25mph. check engine light and battery light came on as she rolled to the side of the road. i tried to crank it when i got too her but it wouldn't start. has a p0340 code crack shaft position sensor.

those are the signs when it happens. belt broke basically in half. right around 90k since it was replaced. it's a gates belt. nothing else failed that caused the belt to break to my knowledge. water pump and idlers spin freely. previous owner also had a timing belt break on him when he changed it last. engine was fine. I'm hoping it's fine again. this is a 2000 lc by the way.View attachment 1927592

and she lives! actually runs a little quieter now too.

Nothing else failed - just a broken Timing Belt?
How old was that belt?

I was curious about the number of years on your Timing Belt.
Mainly because my 2002 LX470 is 17 years old with original belt but only 47K miles.
I'm thinking of waiting till it gets closer to 90K miles and then replace it.

i can't say for sure because i didn't about that with po. only on terms of miles. it certainly wasnt 17 years old.
the belt wasnt age cracked for what it's worth. just torn. i had also heard a ticking coming from the engine area that sounded a bit like a penny in the clothes dryer. that sound it gone now. maybe the belt was damaged for a while and it finally let go.

fwiw i have a tacoma with 325k on it. last time belt change was at dealer around 120k. it looked perfect then. that was probably 15 years ago. after seeing that belt i said i wouldn't feel bad if the next one i changed at 200k.I'm be doing that this weekend.

I've seen pictures of age cracked belts that look scary. with a little work you can loosen timing belt cover and inspect.

7-10yrs is recommended service interval or 90k miles.

@ 17 yrs- youre lucky, and over due.
