How fast in 4H?

I have been able to reach 45-50 mph in 4H with a 40 and first gen. 4runner. Shifting out of 4H in both vehicles was not always easy; to solve this I will drive in reverse for a couple of feet, this mad the transition form 4H to 2H very smooth. When I was a child the winter was spent driving through western MD, WV and PA to go skiing, any time there was snow the 4runner was put in 4H and off we went, we never encountered a problem. I am sure that extend use of the 4WD system in either gear is going to cause wear, I always make sure that I have plenty of “slippage” when engaged and stay away from tight turning.

I don't deliberately drive in 4H on the highway but sometimes coming out of the bush I forget until I've gone up the road a bit, I just run the RH wheels onto the gravel shoulder and push it in to 2H. I rarely try to shift it into 2H sitting still, it usually doesn't work, always shift between 2H and 4H on the fly. T-case is still working after 300,000km (186,000miles). But do not drive it on dry pavement in 4 wheel drive! and yes, if it gets all bound up it won't want to move, you can free it up by jacking up one corner clear of the ground. Been there, done that.
